Lessons: Breaking The Code DVD & eBook By David Garibaldi 
The first band I ever went on road with was a 7-piece group made up of bass, guitar, drums, organ, and three horns - trumpet, trombone, and sax. And while they played many of their own originals, they also covered songs of the great horn bands of the day including Chicago and a group called Tower of Power. This was my first introduction to Tower of Power and drummer David Garibaldi's incredible funkification. This DVD, from Hudson Music, simulates taking actual funk grooving lessons with David himself, as he thoroughly breaks down his unique approach to grooving in the funk style by first playing along with a funky track and then analyzing what he just played for us. This DVD was shot using multiple cameras on David's drumset showing everything going on including his funky footwork. Throughout the DVD, David not only explains and demonstrates his approach but he provides us with some insight as to where he drew his inspiration. Special Features A 47-page printable PDF eBook is included that contains written examples of the exercises David demonstrates throughout the DVD and includes full transcriptions of each of the songs. Lessons - Breaking the Code: The Bottom Line Whether you're strictly a Garibaldi fan or a fan of funk drumming in general, buying this DVD is a no brainer. The segment where he demonstrates The Oakland Stroke is nearly worth the price of admission alone. And when you consider the other lessons covering rhythmic permutations and various odd-time diddle applications played over common time signatures, you're guaranteed to find something of value regardless of the style of music you play. I highly recommend this DVD to drummers of intermediate and advanced levels, especially those looking to increase their creativity and musicality on the drumset.
