Reusing old cymbals
      #41189 - Sun Dec 16 2007 03:18 PM (70.107.4.241)

Hi guys, I have two old cymbals that I'm not using, but instead of leaving them around, I'd like to get some ideas for reusing them. One is a 10' splash whose sound is dead. (I already have a 10' in use). The other is a 20' ride. The sound is ok but I have two rides that I currently use whose sounds I prefer.
Any ideas?

You could try your hand at hand hammering . This will change the sound!

There are a few guys like Mike Skiba and a fellow named Johan, who can re-lathe and re-hammer just about any cymbal into anything you want it to be. I know Johan prefers the B20 A Zildjians to work with but he can use B8, or pretty much anything. He's made some amazing jazz ride cymbals out of what was previously junk. The ride is something you have to take your own head with. The splash on the other hand could be the small cymbal in a trash sound by laying it on top of a bigger cymbal.

Maybe you could experiment with putting some rivets or something like them in the ride. Or maybe you could do as Roger suggested, like laying the splash on top of the ride for a trashy sound.

Jo Jo Meyer. The industrial sound. Hadn't thought of rivets for the old ride which is odd for me. Because that's what I would have done with it myself without even thinking.

This is exactly what I do with a 10" and a 20" that I don't really care for. Stack on on the other and it's a great short trashy effect.

I just checked out Johan's site and it turns out he passed away on the 25th of June
