Here's a couple of great drum videos I stumbled across:
Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utn6GuPuwE8&feature=related
Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3VUs2Stj4o * I love the licks from 0:40 - 0:56sec (already added to my gig bag!)
He seems to use a lot of swiss triplet type fills - split between the toms and snare or cymbal.. but in ways I haven't heard them used before. Must be a Tony Williams influence.. very cool!
there's more but that's all I can process right now. Wow - simply amazing! Even worse they just played in town at jazzfest and I couldn't make it!

Did anyone have any comments on these videos? These are the most amazing drum solos I've seen or heard in a looong time. I plan on learning several of those great licks!
After missing the concert, I went and saw Return To Forever to drown my sorrows. They were wicked ; Stan the Man was in legendary form as were the rest. Lenny White has still got it, but his solo was kind of underwhelming - could be he's still battling a problem with one of his arms.

Vinnie is amazing and you're right about processing it all in.
ok so i'm jealous you went to see RTF! they're playing near me but it cost more $$ than i like to pay! Herbie is playing near me too but it's during the work weak.

From everyone I talked to that saw the Herbie show - they said it was fantastic. They played a modernized version of Chameleon and many other of his hits. as well as some extended solo trading .. Herbie also got up and played some amazing Key-tar.

There's no denying the mans considerable talent but I just dont like watching him play. I can't for the life of me explain why. Probably says more about me than Vinnie. Must admit though, those are some very clever chops he's playing there!

hmm.. I can't think of many pro drummers that I can't stand to watch. Maybe it's his busy jazz style and that left hand traditional grip. My own visual preference from a 'audience perspective' is that matched grip just looks cooler for rock. Trad grip looks cooler for swing. But that's just me!

I always like watching videos of drummers, just so you can see what sorts of things they are doing, and, if possible, take that for yourself to use...
