Speaking of Danny Seraphine...

OK I just made that up, but i just remembered how great a drummer Danny Seraphine is; and how I (and many other drummers from the 70's) borrowed heavily (ok stole) from his deep bag of licks. For example, his solo at the end of Make Me Smile should be a requirement for every beginner drummer as it demonstrates great musicality and technique (use of 3-stroke rolls and accented singles). His plan (according to drummerworld) was to influence other musicians and I think he really succeeded - there's an old video of a drum solo here:drummerworld

Does anyone know what he's up to these days?

I vaguely recall reading that he had quit drumming for many years and recently came back and did a concert. I'll see if I can get more info.

Hey guys - here's a little ditty about Danny. He was also a big influence on me as a kid growing up in the Chicago area.

Does anyone know if Danny once owned a club on the outskirts of Chicago called Beginings? I played there back in the 70's and I seem to remember a connection with the band Chicago.

Beginnings was in Glenview, Illinois, about 5 miles from where I lived then. My band Expose used to play there as well. I think he may have been a co-owner, but that was just talk. we never saw him there, so it was all speculation. They closed down in the late 80's or early 90's. It wasn't in a very good location for traffic and the area became very congested with a lot of strip malls, businesses, and high rise condos.

Re: Speaking of Danny Seraphine...

According to the June 2006 issue of Modern Drummer, Danny will be featured in an article in the July 2006 issue. It's tentatively titled "Danny Seraphine: Rebirth After Chicago."

That issue should be on the newsstands before the end of May, or, if you're a subscriber like me, in the mailbox before the first of June.

While you're waiting for the article, you can check out more of Danny Seraphine, including the aforementioned "Make Me Smile" and the even longer solo on Chicago's "I'm A Man," at:

Re: Speaking of Danny Seraphine...

He is one of the most underappreciated drummers in Rock. Another one would be Phil Ehart of Kansas. Then there is Bobby Columby of Blood, Sweat & Tears. These guys were really pushing the envelope in their day. It wasn't so much their technical playing, although they were all quite good. It was more just a broadening of the styles being incorporated into rock. They were moving away from the role of timekeeper and really becoming part of the ensemble. It's really hard to imagine most of their songs without the parts that they composed for them. I love Danny Saraphine and I used to steal from him whatever I could.

Jovato - Bobby Columby was another one of those guys that I 'borrowed' from too.. he certainly had a unique take on things - a real jazz guy
