heyyyyyy all, I just had a lesson with Tiger Bill this past Saturday, and besides learning some amazing new exercises and moving on to the next phase in my development. (just finished Bill's modified Moeller, starting to work on push/pull and combining arm/wrist/and finger motions around the drumset for maximum power and speed) I picked up Volume 1, and even though some of it was review for me, there were many excellent tips on the GL Stone level system for dynamics and finger control as well. Besides, it never hurts to review and make sure everything is solid from the ground up, trust me, you'll be glad you put in the time in the beginning. The approach that Bill uses is the best I've ever seen on an instructional video. Don't be surprised if people start to copy it, if they do, you saw it here first! You will improve, and you will also benefit immeasurably when you set up your drums to best adapt to this system. I just used it on 2 gigs this past weekend, and noticed some really good improvements in my musical feel and groove. Buy the DVD! Buy the DVD! Buy the DVD! I'll put a review up in the coming weeks and I can't wait for Volume 2! Tension = bad, Loose and relaxed = good! Howie www.myspace.com/howietherockstar |

Ha! Fat Chance! I got the email saying it has been sent yesterday, so it will probably arrive next Wednesday now! Patience, patience... ![]() When does the pre-order for the next DVD become available? It's out in another month, isn't it? Could posting times be taken into account when posting out to international mailboxes, Tiger? Mail from the US takes between 5-7 days to get to NZ... |

Well time is ticking down for the pre-release special to run down (today - Happy July 4th!).. so I took the plunge and ordered a copy - it's the least I can do to support this great site. As I'm playing in a big 70's show band now - if I discover anything that helps my hands and wrists withstand the major workout I get when playing with these guys - then it will be well worth it! I gete to cover parts by Ronnie Tutt (Elvis drummer from the early 70s) and if you haven't heard him before (check Youtube) he's definitely got 'monster chops'! Course I also get to cover parts by guys like Danny seraphine (Chicago), Bobby Columby (BS&T), Jim Gordon, Hal Blaine, Gary Chester, yadayadayada. After one three hour show, you can hang me on a line to dry! |

Hey DomNJOzz - Thanks for the good word! I'm happy that you liked it. Pre-order for Volume 2 will probably be sometime toward the end of July - I will be able to tell you more once I get a firm release date. I will try my best with the posting time, Alistair! Ronnie Tutt played some really cool stuff back in the '70s with Elvis and ELvis liked him so much he made him his musical director. Elvis also gave Ronnie a solo at every gig. Unfortunately, I've only heard Ronnie stretch out once with Elvis and I don't think it was ever released on record. It would be cool if Ronnie could get RCA to give him copies of his solo stuffs with Elvis. I met Ronnie in LA in '79 and he's not only a great drummer but a great guy too. If you get my Tension Free Stuff done, you won't have any problem playing as loud or as fast as you want. Cutting your gig will literally be like a day at the beach! And that's no exaggeration! ![]() Thank you all for purchasing my DVD. I greatly appreciate the support! Initial sales went extremely well, which means that I can now afford to put out more cool stuff!

My copy came in the mail on Thursday, but I was busy so I couldn't start watching it until today. VERY NICE, BILL! SIMPLE AND TO THE POINT but thorough with the basics. Thanks so much! Can't wait for Vol 2. Very well done job. Watching through it once, you have straightened some things out for me I've had issues with for eons. Thanks again, Bill. |

Cool! I'm happy that you like it. Volume One is really the core of my entire approach, which lays the groundwork for Volume 2: the more advanced stuff. It's similar to building a house. If you start with a solid foundation, you can easily build on it and nothing will ever collapse on you! |

It arrived today, and so far I am very impressed. I REALLY like the fact that Bill covers both matched grip and traditional. I can't quite tell from the video which side of the forearm the butt of the right stick should pass (the side nearest the body or the side furthest from the body). I realize that with German grip it would be on the side furthest from the body and with French it would be the side nearest the body, but I keep slamming my wrist/forearm with it and so I need some guidance picking a side. |

I really enjoyed the DVD, and even more, it reinforced all the great things that I have learned from Tiger Bill's Drumbeat home page. I've never had the chance to take a lesson in person, but at least this provides another way to reinforce his teachings. Its important to see how he really emphasises throwing down the stick at max. speed. I think that I've definately been taking the lazy route lately, so now I know what I can do to get the best of my already limited practice time. Thanks Tiger! Nice board chopping sequence as well! |

....and if we notice....many videos reference and pay homage to a guru such as Jim Chapin, Joe Morello, Sanford Moeller, et al. Who does Tiger reference? .... BRUCE LEE! TOO COOL! |

Interesting that you mentioned that. I am not trying to give an answer, I have the same problem sometimes. Good point, and I await an answer to this! I have noticed similar problems with the left hand matched but its not a big deal, when I wear my watch, the end of the stick clicks the band or without taps my wrist - sometimes. I think you MUST set up a good mirror in front of you perpendicular to the floor so you see yourself straight on and also make sure your light is even so you see your hands in true balance (lamp overhead might help) so you can see what's going on. I should set this up to see why this is happening with me. I have suspected that this might come from the relationship to the height (and angle of the surface and its direction from your body, in some cases) with your striking zone and also how far lower the height of your wrist is in relationship to the height of the elbow. If you check out the Buddy Rich book from the past (Henry Adler written) with the matched grip hand the wrist is at relative height 2 inches lower than the elbow. You shouldn't be reaching up to strike the surface (office and typing ergonomics dicates pretty much the same thing, keyboard heights are lower than a desk surface height for similar ergonomic reasons) On first quick run through the DVD, my impression is that Tiger has explained the basics very well and with focus. It makes you focus on the principles. I think a few nit picks are deliberately left out as if you follow it, things will fall in naturally. Like the place on the index finger where the stick touches. Some techniques demand that you have the stick in the first joint and the stick never touches the palm. I think this dictate just adds to the students problems, I am comfortable with the stick vaguely to the second joint, and I try to favor the middle finger fulcrum somewhat, but that is advanced from what Tiger is showing us. If you concentrate on the first exercises with the full stroke and study tigers hands, it isn't an issue- relaxed grip. Someone correct me if I am wrong. So I second the question and the problem. Thanks for mentioning that. What is the answer? - Jerry |

The problem you describe is usually caused by improper stick balance. That is, you're leaving too much tail on the butt end of the stick! Review my chapter on Stick Balance and let me know.

Thanks! I guess I rushed through the stick balance section a bit too fast in my excitement to get to the lessons. I went back and worked on it a bit and am no longer slapping my wrist. |

Bear45, You seem to have more questions then can be answered by the internet or a DVD. You should really seek a qualified teacher. Any qualified teacher can help you with these things. Good luck!!!! |

Well, the DVD arrived yesterday, and the heavens opened - a good excuse to stay inside and watch it! I liked the detailed explanations of the full/half/low strokes, this was good to review for me (having learned these from the descriptions on this site). I was particularly interested in the finger control part - this is one thing I need to bring 'up to speed' as it were. By the time the next dvd is out, I should be getting there! A job well done Bill, can't wait for the next one now! |

I've been getting a large amount of tension in my left hand which runs from the back of the hand, all the way up the forearm until it hits the elbow (but absolutely never with my right) when practicing my rudiments at 160+ bpm. A local drum teacher even told me that this tension was acceptable! Am I to understand that if I practice all the stuff that these tension-free drumming DVDs offer, that I can actually get RID of this horrible tension that I've been struggling with for so long??!!??! It sounds like the drum equivalent of winning the lottery!

Take it from me - Playing with any kind of Tension anywhere in your body is UNACCEPTABLE! ![]() Tension is totally unnecessary! And when you get rid of it, you literally be able to play all day long and you'll feel better at the end than when you started. My Concepts of Tension Free Drumming Series will show you how to approach drumming from a totally new perspective. Received the DVD today and all i can say is, Outstanding! Like there are true Masters in the Eastern part of the World which one can study Music with for an entire lifetime, We've got Masters like mr. Meligari here in the Western part of the World. I'm looking at probably the most comprehensive and outstanding Education drumming-material available! The way Bill presents the principles of the tensionfree drum-concept is the best i've ever seen. Methodic, pedagogic, and crystal-clear explanations makes this an educational Milestone of Drumming. Not to mention the Karatescene, which is worth all the money in itself. Thought that was an FX at first, lol. Buy This! |

I'd also like to hear TB's view on the 2nd finger fulcrum, as I use it myself. Although my grip slides around depending on what I'm doing (matched/trad/2nd finger/1st finger). Bill mentions it as being an advanced technique. I'm guessing that it shouldn't make too much difference.. as long as its 'tension free'! [edit] Oops I finally did it.. I replied to the wrong thread - oh well its still related! Here's some more feedback on TigerBills DVD: - ordering it was a breeze; it arrived in like 3-4 days in my mailbox - I liked the presention; it felt like a one-on-one lesson. Bill explained everything clearly and concisely, and put the right emphasis on the key points. So many drum videos just brush past stuff and you're always wanting more explanation! Or even worse; those drum videos that lack any kind of explanation.. so in that respect I'd give it 10/10. - at the start and finish where TB plays on the Pintech e-kit; I'd really like to hear TB wind out on acoustic drums - I'm a bit of a purist that way! ( I understand the point of course - the 'future of drumming' and all that. I just hope that in the year 3000 I'll still be able to sell my killer acoustic kit for a bundle! (and that human aging can be prevented) - Overall: thumbs up! |
