http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/redi...4951042666.html ME!... in our most prestigous national newspape no less. So I thought I would give my interpretation of what was actually said ( as well a saying LOOK AT ME!!!!!) How to interpret a news article; "practising in his garage" I've never played in the garage in my life, I've a nice room in the house or as a band we use an excellent rehearsal studio... they took my picture in the garage 'cause the photographer said to set it up there. "mild-mannered IT project manager" Reality... I specialise in Projects that need to be saved.. it's unfortunate but when I take over a project your probably getting fired real soon. "I keep it all together … I'm like the engine of a car." Reality.. didn't say it was a good car, maybe like a 1964 Skoda with carby trouble.. "said the 50-year-old " Reality.. the journo originally had me as 55... Bleep, bleep %^$$*@( "while his band doesn't expect to trouble the pop charts any time soon, "we do good"." reality... at the moment we couldn't get a decent gig if we paid for it. "Most of them have no illusions about their skill" Reality.. yes I do, but maybe it's a delusion. "20 cymbals in three years" Reality.. well it was 20 in two days, maybe 40 in three years.. but they were a bargain, honest. "It's more than just a hobby or unfinished business" Reality.. I specifically said it's got nothing to do with unfished business.. I just like playing drums, no freudian, deep cerebral pyschcological mumbo jumbo.... All a bit of fun though. My 15 minutes of fame... |

Can I have your autograph Stuart?

Priceless picture Stuart! I have to agree with the photographer.. it just looks more interesting playing in a garage (even if its just to sell the story). If it was in a basement studio, it would have just been another studio picture (yawn). Good article.. |

Great story! I like your interpretations of what was really said also. You should have worked the name of your band into the article (if you have CHOSEN one yet); may have led to some bookings! |

nice kit, is it Pearl? your article is inspirational. |

Quote: Well the inspiration was entirely the journalist's... I was just the pretty face forthe picture. The kit's a Slingerland, Studio King I think. I tried to get the band name in (the name still being stuck as [Band Name Here].. but it got edited out. And... Steve isn't getting any autographed pictures until he spells my name correctly... jeez.. you don't see people spelling John Bohnam wrong now do you! Cheers StUArt |

It's harder to get Jon Bonnam's autograph, though.

Great story all round. I still have my pictures taken amongst the pipes etc in my basement drum space. The last promo picture taken was for Serpent Cymbals and I'd just come out of the fanciest studios on the East coast. Something about a drummer working away in a corner in amongst the jumble catches the fancy of the public, and other drummers I might add. As to the press. Well...I've spent a good quarter of my life sweeping up after those birds. I think basically entertainment reporters live in their own fantasies three quarters of the time. If they had to pay the amount of dues and work as hard at their craft as we do ours, well...I think they would just melt down to jibbering idiots. They are half way there any way. It's just a damned fine thing that you got yourself into the papers period. Good stuff. Shows guts. And that's what drumming is all about really. Don't need your autograph old man, I have your picture. That's worth at least 10,000 more words than anything else I could think of. |

I've just checked with my manager. She says once I finish the dishes, I can do autographs. We must have the same manager

Nice one Stuart, you look like the Tasmanian Devil behind that kit! |

Don't feel bad cats. I have the same manager at home and another one out there in the Music World. You see see it when they lock horns. I just sit back and wait until a stalemate happens and then step in. Of course the outside manager always wins but I get the residual flak, so I make sure the outside manager keeps me working a lot. I've had the outside manager a lot longer than the inside one! |

Nice one for getting in the papers, Stuart! I assume you get plenty of 'newspaper inches' in your local rag? Making the 'big time'! I love how journos twist quotes/words... |

And my manager is pushy - we all must have the same manager! |

Nice! I love the photo. You look like you're fighting off an attack of invading cymbals! |
