EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

I own a Slingerland 1970's Vintage drum set purchased new back then ( I am the original owner). For some reason I never replaced the bass drum heads. My son started taking lessons about 6 months ago and I began working on the set to improve the sound. I have always had to put a pillow in the bass drum to improve the sound. I purchased a Evans 22" EMAD bass drum head (beater side), removed the pillow, replaced the head and tuned the drum. I was totally amazed at the improved sound quality. I wanted to keep the original Slingerland Logo head on the front so to further improve the sound I took it to my local drumming professional (Bill Cairo of Cairos drum house also a graduate of Berklee) to have a 6" hole cut in the head and a HOLZ protector ring installed. WOW! Now I have a GREAT sounding bass drum beyond my expectations. This Evans EMAD externally muffled head is the best. It comes with two sizes of foam rings that install on the outside (I use the larger one), the bass drum looks much better without the pillow stuffed inside and the tone is fantastic with a cannon like boom emitting from the 6" hole in the original Slingerland head.

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

What a great drumhead! Hat's off to Bob Gatzen for this creation. I'm getting great low end out of my kickdrum. The only problem with this head is the plastic holding the damper ring cracks and then buzzes while playing. I hope they find a solution to this(going on my third one)or I may have to find an alternative. It's getting expensive.

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

Hmmmmm....never had a problem with the plastic ring and I have gone through 3 emads - 20". I noticed in the box with my most recent emad purchase that there was a notice indicating to press firmly around the circumference of the ring with your finger to make the head funtion properly. This was the first one of these I have seen and caught me by surprise. Anyway - the emad is the best in my opinion - I have a 20 inch bass drum from DW and a small fortune invested in "bass drum head experiments gone bad"!! I've tried all the Evans EQ series 1, 2, 3, 4, Aquarian, Attack, Remo powerstroke 3 etc. Nothing comes close to the Emad with an Ebony resonant head made for DW by Remo (4 holes about 1/2 inch wide in this head instead of a large one.) For an even cooler sound try an Emad on the resonant side as well and you have different combos of muffling to experiment with there too!!!

I have heard NOTHING but great things about these heads, after buying one yesterday, I have been very happy with it.
Great head, it even works wide open etc...
thanks

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

I bought two of these for both my bass drums and I have nothing but respect for these heads. I have mine tuned really low and still have the pillow in there for more of a smack sound than a booming. These heads sre great!

Does anybody know how these compare with the Aquarian Super kick (I love mine!)?

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

The emad is almost like a super kick in that even without the foam rings, it's pretty warm and focused.

I would not be surprised if an emad was a superkick with a ring retainer attached.

I find that the emad can be pretty good, but the wide ring muffles too much IMO.

I am old school, and would prefer a superkick with an evans drum pillow.

I had been using remo cs black dots, wheich are pretty cool sounding, but lack a bit of warmth and depth. I have ordered a pair of superkick I heads. I don't need the 2 ply version.

Hey, C.C.,

I have not personally used an EQ, but I have an EMAD and I also love it. I can't imagine a better head. I have talked to many drummers who also are thrilled with the EMAD. I don't think you'd be disappointed by the EMAD. I haven't checked the price difference lately, but I am sticking with the EMAD because I love it.

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

i have a 20in. EMAD coated,i use the larger ring.no pillow. my front head is just a plain 1 ply logo head no holes.i also use a puresound rubber beater! the sound is very controlable,to me. i love my sound.but i "can" get the sound with a coated remo pinstripe with internal ring too! others may not agree, but it's the musician not the equipment...but i do recommend the EMAD.

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

I'm using a Pearl Forum, and when I tried an EMAD last summer I had very weird results. I think it can mostly be blamed on my reso head, which was 4 years old at the time with a makeshift port that I gouged out using a razorblade (random cuts make things sound better, right?). My bass drum lost all its presence, and sounded more like a fart than a punch. I went back to a Superkick 1 and was much happier. Also, replacing the resonant head last week was a huge improvement.

I've never had great success tuning my kick drum - what methods do people here swear by?

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

I used the EQ3 batter and the EQ2 resonant with the radiator slits for the resonant for years. I recently switched to the EMAD using the small ring only and the standard Evans front head from the GMS factory. I also use a Danmar cradle instead of spurs on my GMS SE 20x16. BIG SOUND!! The bass is stand alone because I also use a rack.

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

i've grown tired of all of my evans drum heads, and replaced them back to remo!!! remo rings longer, that's what i like. BUT!!! i kept my evens emad bass drum head on!!! it just sounds perfect to me still !!! i use the larger ring. my reso head is a single ply coated with no hole. just a felt strip used on the reso head! and it's a 20" ludwig usa birch. i too agree, it's the musician not the instrument!

Re: EVANS EMAD BASS DRUM HEAD

I have been playing with the EMAD on my bass drum for a long time while playing REMO on my other drums. I have since switched the other drums over to Evans EC2.

I agree man, I got an EMAD when they first came out and I will never buy another kind of bd head again! No fancy muffling device even comes close to sounding as good as the emad!
