Tama Cobra Clutch

TAMA iron cobra cobra clutch.
Online about $100

I have had one now since the very 1st day they became commercially available. Not once have I ever looked back on my old hat-clutch and wished I’d kept it. The very idea of hands-free operation of a hi-hat is superb. I was asked just this week “How does it work?” it’s not easy to ascertain from some photos.

Connection:
The device goes beside your hi-hat pedal, and attached to the stand via a tama clamp. It basically acts in parallel.

Operation:
As you can see in the photos, the user steps on the clutch to engage the device. It pushes down on a rubber-tipped plunger and holds the hi-hat pedal in place. A knob is used to vary the pressure of the plunger to give you a looser or tighter clamp on the hats. It will allow very tight, to quite a bit of slosh.

There is a gauge to show you where the device is set. To release, you step on the “release” pedal and the hi-hat goes back to it’s normal operation, very transparently if you practice with it.

The product is rock solid, as it’s withstood at least a year of playing. It’s a great way to slap the hats down for double kick work. Or for that matter- doing something elsewhere.

IMO, there is no contest between this device, and an ordinary clutch. It’s fool proof, bullet proof and very flexible. I think it’s well worth the money.

Does this work only with the Tama HiHat?

It should work on just about anything. You can see how it attaches and works. Basically, a clamp to the stand, and a plunger goes down on the footpedal.

Do you have to attatch it each time or does it fold up somehow?

It folds up. IIRC, it comes in a hard plastic case.

That's what happens when a young gun goes up against a seasoned GC pro with a bad case of gear lust! (They must start planning their vacations & adjusting their portfolios when they see you at the door) Now step back while I go online and get midiebayeval! [Razz]
