I'm a returning drummer, get this, after 25 years. It was a surprise to me as well, just ended up getting behind a set and fell in love, it's a long story. Bought a used set of Tama Rockstars to get started again. Paid $450 (with cheap ZBT cymbals) and thought I did pretty well until I ended up checking out Guitar Center and found them new for $499 along with many other sets of this category for the same price as well as other great deals. Didn't notice Guitar Center mentioned on the site and thought I would let you know. I'm not sure if they're all accross the States but they are in California. Never have seen such a low price even on the much touted online purveyors. My first attempt (shear inexperience) led me to go for Musicians Friend? Gretsch Blackhawks (Gretsch quality, great price?!?) $279.00, should have known better, but opened one box to find drums by Toys Are Us and immediately returned them. Got educated at DrumGuru and went for the Rockstars.

Shel, Next time you go looking for a set of drums or cymbals, may I suggest the local music paper or even the classified section of your local newspaper. of course you know about e-bay but you don't have to rely on someone's opinion of a set without seeing it for your self. (which is what I prefer) By the way Guitar Center has 100 stores across the country.

Aside from Guitar Center's silly name (for a music store that carries many other products, including drums) the main reason I haven't listed them is because they don't sell over the Web, only through physical store locations but they are in practically every state. And, what's really cool, is that they have a Drum Off every year. Check it out: Drum Off 2002 And see what you can win. If there's a location near you get over there and try out. All you have to do is play a 3 minute solo. I wish they had this kind of stuff when I was growing up!

Guitar Center is the most awesomest place! I live in San Diego and I bought my Drumset, Cymbals, Djembe, Congas and even my Marimba there! It's pretty cool because we have this one salesperson who always hooks us up with a great deal, which is cool.
Guitar Center doesn't have keyboard mallets or else they would be perfect.

Howdy, Concerning Guitar Center, the closest one to me is Cincinnasti Ohio. Matter of fact, I visit them often. Twice in the last 4 days. I bought a Dr Beat DB-88 metronome there Saturday for $149, quite a bit less than the marked price. They will match any price you have at another store. I was told by one of their department managers once that they own Musician's Friend. That would explain why their website sends you directly to Musician's Friend online catalog. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Yes, Guitar Center does, in fact, own and operate Musician's Friend. A couple of years ago they also bought out the American Music Group (owner of Giardinelli mouthpieces, etc.), which specializes in school program instruments.
That pretty much makes them the most rounded instrument distribution company I've ever heard of.

Quick tip: if you go on Musiciansfriend.com and find a good deal, bring the printout to Geetar Center and they will honor that price if they stock the item.
