Hi: I just found this Website/Forum yesterday (November 8, 2002), and like it so much I joined the free membership and am registering to get on the forum. Who Knows I may be the oldest member here? Here goes My name is Ed, I'm 71 years old and Polish. I was born in Buffalo, NY and when I was a kid I kept time on the kitchen table to music playing on the radio. I never took drum lessons but at 16, I bought a cheap 3 piece drum set and 1 Zildjian cymbal and formed a Polish playing band, Had a Ball playing Polish weddings. Joined the Navy and had a 5 piece band (still playing by ear} now my ears are large haha just kidding. After 4 years in the service I got out and got married and in tough times played in different bands, such as Polka, Country, Rock and Roll, etc., then I gave up drumming and studied accordion and played a few years in a band then gave up band playing and just played for relatives at the holidays. Played a little bass guitar also, Let say I just love music. I bought a new set of drums October 1, 2002, and want to learn drumming the proper way. I can read music and time signatures and am studying with tapes and books all the rudiments and play with some play along CD's. I am doing pretty good but would appreciate any help and suggestions all you fine drummers can give me. I practice every chance I can and am eager to learn proper techniques. I ordered the tape BE A DRUMHEAD, I'm sure that will help me. I hope I didn't bore any of you with this profile? Thank You in advance for any help you can throw my way. PS When I was a kid I went to a Gene Krupa Concert (Price then $1.50) Also seen Buddy Rich perform.

I admire your desire for drumming and music young fella! I'm 53 yrs and thought I was starting kind of late (2 yrs ago) but it's never to late. In reading your post I find we have a few things in common. I started on the accordian at 7 yrs of age and went on to get a teachers degree for it (Pedro Diero Accordian course) when I was 15. That piece of paper and 2.50 might by me a draft at the local pub. Ha ha, but I had a great time playing Polish weddings and Irish ones for that matter when I was a kid. Since then I've played keys(mostly a hammond b-3 organ) in Soul, R&B and rock bands as a side line of work. I always loved the drums but only as of a few years ago I started playing them. Little did I realize how I would be bit by the bug. I have practiced almost every day for the last 2yrs for 1 to 3 hours per day, and for the last year I've been taking lessons from a wonderful teacher. I'm in a starting up band now with players all my age or so about 8 of us, playing Tower of Power type stuff and I'm having a ball. You give me inspiration. Keep it up my friend.
Happy drumming,
Scottmiester

Welcome to the site and to the forum drumsticks! And I agree with Scottmiester, it's never too late to learn how to play drums! Check out my article on that subject: Making It In Music, At Any Age. I'm sure you'll enjoy "Be A Drumhead" as it is definitely inspirational, but it is not an video that covers exercises and actual techniques you can learn. But there are plenty of videos and books available that can help you with that. You'll find the best ones listed in my Subjects section that you'll find on the left hand side of each page on this Web site - with the exception of the Forum you are in now. Tehre are also lots of free lessons that will help you - You'll find those by following this link.
Again, welcome to the forum and the site and to the wonderful world of drumming!
