Howdy!
      #25121 - Tue Jan 06 2004 01:55 PM (64.12.96.104)

I was just noticing that no one has posted here in a while, and I'm kinda new, so I thought I'd drop a line. I'm a percussion education undergrad, and love playing marimba. I've only skimmed the surface of jazz vibes, and I want to get deeper into that. What books/videos could ya'll recommend? Mostly what I've done is just read down some charts, and solo with some friends. Thanks!

Dillon

Howdy, Dillon, and Welcome!!

There are several "standard" texts, like "Vibraphone Technique dampening and pedaling" by Dave Friedman and the Gary Burton books, but you might like to check out "the Vibes Real Book" by Arthur Lipner. The first part of the book deals with some technical issues, some theory and comping and improv stuff, but the meat of the book is some good jazz standards like "Bag's Groove" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" that can get you right into playing some tunes. Good luck and enjoy the voyage!!

thanks for the suggestion! I figured the Burton books were a givin. Can I assume that one of these books (or any other) teaches the Burton grip? It owuld only be logical. I've been a Steven's player for years, and been picking up traditional, and Burton looks interesting. Thanks again.

Hi, Dill,

The best in-print description/explaination I've seen of the Burton grip, is in the first volume of Dave Samuels' books. Very clearly laid out.

Not to hijack the thread, but please don't feel it a requirement to switch from Stevens grip just to play vibes. By all means, explore the options that are out there, but there are no "vibraphone police" who will take away your instrument if you play jazz with the Stevens grip. [Wink] (It works for Joe Locke, BTW...)

Ditto, James!
I'm mostly a marimba guy, but I play jazz whether on ba or vibes with Stevens. As I've posted on marimba.org, Doug Walter at U of Colorado does classical marimba with Burton, as well as jazz vibes.

Thanks, and I agree! Playing a certain grip because it's "right" isn't right in my book. I seek the ways of Burton simply to see if the grip is for me. I knew a guy who played flute for years, and when he tried French Horn one day, realized that he was freakishly good at it, and became a phenomenal player! Also after experimenting with traditional, I like the feel a little better, and it's less stress on the fingers. Thanks again for your help!

Dill
