Rhythm Song
      #25141 - Wed Oct 30 2002 09:56 AM (131.128.152.220)

Has anybody out there played Rhythm Song by Paul Smadbeck? About 4-5 years ago, my percussion teacher, Ronald Stabile, ordered this song and liked it a lot. His students heard it and nearly all of them wanted to play it. Since then, about 8 or 9 students of his have played it and he's starting to get sick of it. Its a pretty fun piece that seems to flow under your hands. Anybody else played this one?

Yeah, "Rhythm Song" can be infectious...

I've heard lots of variations on it, starting with Smadbeck's own suggestion of having two (or more) marimbas playing simultaneously, an octave apart (with marimbas duplicating the octave ranges as you add more than two instruments). I've also heard it done with hand drumming accompaniment, with drum set...and I'll bet some of those ideas arose with a teacher thinking, "Oh, Lord, what can we do with this so we don't get completely bored with it!"...which isn't fair to the piece, it's not boring - but it can be overwhelming when half the studio is working on it at the same time!
