This isn't a mallet percussion question in the strictest sense, but...
I'm looking for a timpani solo to play on a recital. My problem is finding something that is fun and challenging to learn and play, won't annoy the audience, and is readily available in print to purchase. I'd like to find something for timpani and tape, if possible. Anybody know where to look? Or is anybody writing something that they would like performed?

I'm about fifteen years removed from the last time I worked on any timpani solos, but two that come to mind are:
Bill Cahn: Raga No. 1 John Bergamo: Four Pieces for Timpani
Another possibility: it's not a solo, but there's a duo for timpani written by Andre and Jacques Philodor - "March for Two Pairs of Kettledrums". I think it's one of the first pieces ever written for timpani, but don't quote me on that. I performed it on my senior recital back in '88 - two players, two timps per player. Fun to play, IMHO. I *think * it's still in print...check with Steve Weiss Music - I think that's where I bought my copy.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll have to check those pieces out; I don't think I've heard of them.
