Onstage Injuries!!!
      #31541 - Thu Nov 06 2003 09:57 PM (199.64.0.252)

I was just wondering if anyone else has had a injury during a gig. One time I managed to pinch my finger between the stick and hi-hat, this was at the beginning of the song so for ever fill following blood would spray all over my drum heads. At the end of the song I said, " Break Time" the rest of my band turned around and then fell on there knees laughing. That just reinforced the drummer stereotype that we're all fimilar with.

Doing rim shots i once missed the rim and somehow struck a tender spot between the legs. [Eek!]
Believe me you soon learn to do some stick contol after a hit like that.
And did i tell the band why i missed a beat and doubled over with a tear in my eyes .....never [Big Grin]

I haven't yet been hurt while playing, but I have pinched fingers hard enough to raise blood blisters when closing the legs on cymbal stands. And once, as I was walking out from behind my kit at the start of a break, my bass player turned suddenly and whacked me on the cheek with the headstock of his guitar. That drew a little blood and the next day I had a nice little bruise to explain. [Frown]

During Summer of 2002, I was playing a cover gig @ the New Jersey shore when we started to do the song "Aeroplane" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. [Cool]

Well, the combination of lots of people in a tiny bar soon got the best of the dancing drunks, [Razz] 2 of which knocked into my bass player, [Eek!] all 3 of them then fell into my drumset, [Roll Eyes] knocking my hi-hat, left crash cymbal and snare drum into me and knocking me over.

The funny part was that one of the drunks hit a cymbal with his hand on the way down and it was perfectly on the beat. [Wink]

We played it off as a pause and the guitar player improvised for a little before we set back up and kicked back into the song.

There were no injuries other then some bruises, but that's the risk you take playing places where the goal is to sell lots of alcohol.

I was playing a bar gig in Michigan back in the late 70's and snuck a sip of someone's rum & coke between sets. I later did a fill around the toms and fell off my kit. I kept playing (one hand on the bass drum pedal & the other flailing around up top still trying to keep a sembalance of time.) As I got situated, I realized people were clapping and thought it was part of the act. The band never let me forget it [Frown] ....luckily, pride was the only injury.

Hitting myself in the face ever once in a while isn't unusual, so I didn't think much of it at one particular gig. What I didn't realize yet during the chaotic metal gig was that the tip of the sytick had broken off and there was now a gash on my right cheekbone. I didn't catch on unrtil I looked down and saw blood on my snare at the end of the song.
