Baião Rhythm for Drumset
      #32711 - Wed Dec 24 2003 02:31 AM (66.21.112.88)

A couple years back there was an issue of Modern Drummer (I think Travis Barker was on the cover) that featured the "Baião Rhythm" for drumset... does anyone have that rhythm or know of that rhythm... I remember it stood out to me as something I really liked but the page got ripped in moving and I threw away the magazine...

If anyone has a link to an online copy of that rhythm... or if anyone has some information about it I'd gladly appreciate.

I'm primarily a marimbist, and I set my sticks down for about a year and focused on mallets but it just seems like I need to get back to the drumset... (There's no percussionist like a well-rounded percussionist)...

NEways...

thanks in advance for your help!

Ahh, my favorite Brazilian beat of all time...

Here's one version to get you started. I'm not very good at tab "notation," but I'll give it a shot. Think "cut time" for this one:

RC x - x x x - x x | x - x x x - x x
SD - - - - - - x x | - - - - - - x x
BD x - - x - - x - | x - - x - - x -
HH - - x - - - x - | - - x - - - x -

Check out Ed Uribe's book on Brazilian drum set and percussion, as well as recordings by Airto. Off the top of my head, I seem to recall that his "Humble People" album has at least one nice Baiao on it.

Good call, xentrik! [Smile]

http://www.moderndrummer.com/playing.asp

...it has the article available for download as a .pdf file.

He has the hi-hat (w/pedal) played on the downbeats, at least in the examples shown on the .pdf, which is different from how I learned the beat, and from how I hear it played by Airto and Peter Erskine, among others. That certainly doesn't mean he's wrong, but it is different, and offers a significantly different feel compared to playing it on the off-beats.

As with many Latin styles, the Baião basically consists of the steady pattern that James wrote above in the Bass Drum part of his Baião tab. The patterns you add with the other three limbs, is basically up for grabs as long as you don't lose (and the other patterns don't interfere with) the basic pattern. [Cool]
