Hey guys and gals, I need your venerable expertise on this issue:o) I have an 18" Slingerland FT that I'd like to convert to a Bass drum so that I'd have a kinda Be-Bop kit (18"B,13"RT,16"FT). I was thinking of removing and using the hardware off my 24" Slingerland bass drum to do that (set-o-matic tom holder and disappearing four leg spurs). This is my WMP Gene Krupa Kit and I certainly don't want to ruin this fine kit, but it is very LARGE and I seldom use it. The 24" bass is just too darn big for me to be comfortable behind:o( Any suggestions?? Maybe I should just buy a Be-Bop kit with an 18" bass?? THANKS!!

I've been looking into converting my 16" floor tom (great drum, just doesn't get used anymore) into a bebop bass drum, but I haven't finished the process yet - so I don't have any answers for you at the moment. I've got one or two thoughts that I'll humbly share, however...
Have you considered one of the "bass drum cradle" devices currently on the market? That would preclude having to redrill the shell for the spurs, etc. I don't know how this would affect your plans to mount toms onto the shell - which brings me to my next question...
How much of a load would you be putting onto the shell by mounting rack toms on it? Any concerns that the 18" wouldn't be able to hold up to the stress? Any chance you could adjust your setup to mount the toms on floor stands (or a rack) rather than off of the bass drum?

Looking again at your post, and at the sizes you're thinking of for your "bebop" kit (13/16/18)...I'm wondering if you won't want smaller toms, yielding something like a 12/14/18, and giving you a bit more of a difference in diameter between the floor tom and the bass. (Granted, in bop, the bass drum has a lot of "tom qualities" to its sound, but still...it might be nice to have more separation.)
(Of course, I'm writing all of this without hearing your drums - for all I know, you've tried this already (with some sort of system to hold the 18" in place as a BD) and you may have already determined that the sizes you've got will work fine.)

James: Many thanks for the rapid reply!! Well, the Slingerland 18" FT that I am thinking about using as a bass IS a cannon and it has many plys, BUT I was not going to mount the 13" ride tom on the FT. I am kinda stuck with these sizes since the Krupa kit is a 24B/13RT/16FT/18FT configuration. And YES... I searched the net and found that I can simply buy a conversion kit OR cradle to sit the FT in (however, the conversion kit by Trick is for a 3 legged FT and my 18" FT has 4 legs:o( I am trying to find the new Pearl Jungle GIG conversion kit picture to see if that might also be an option. AND I am looking at buying a Gretch Catalina Elite kit with 18B,12RT,14FT (although I really don't need the snare that comes with a new kit... there is a guy up in Orange county selling a perfect kit for me IF he doesn't want TOO much money for it... Gretch Catalina Elite 18B/8RT/10RT/12RT/14FT - I have emailed him to see how much he wants for it altogether... he's selling the bass and toms individually). I may just go that route and buy them and SUFFER the consequences when MI ESPOSA finds out that I've bought another kit:o)

Hey Popeye,
Here's a link to the "Accessories" page on the Pearl site, where they have the Jungle Gig conversion kit.
http://www.pearldrum.com/accs.asp
They only list it as being for 16" toms, but you might e-mail them and see if it is workable for your 18".

Hey Popeye, I just opened up the 2004 Midwest Percussion catalog and on page 36 there is a new offering from DW you may want to look at. It' called DW's New Bass Drum Cradle, and judging from the picture, it looks as though all you have to do is remove the four legs from your 18" FT and your in business. The price is real attractive too! Only $94.95, which is better than springing for a new set, and will probably keep harmony on the home front. With the quality of DW's merchandise, I don't think you can go wrong, and as long as you are going to mount your toms on separate stands, you'll be able to maintain the integrity of your original set, should you ever decide to return to that set up. Good Luck. I hope this helps. Ross
P.S. Go to www.midwestpercussion.com or call 1-800-282-DRUM to order a catalog. I've used their services before and have been extremely satisfied. Happy Holidays To You!!!
