Hi All, I asked about the padouk bar marimbas and now have a problem. I have contacted Doug Demorrow. His practice instrument sounds perfect. The problem is I don't have the space for the size of the instrument. He send the measurements to me. I own a really small home and I just don't have the space to house it. I thought I would. I really want to get a practice instrument for my son. We're starting the Goldenberg Xlyo method and I want to start him on 4 mallets. Yellow After the Rain and go from there.
What instrument can you recommend. Would a 4 octive xylo work? I'm stumped and bummed. Please feel free to give any recommendations you may have.
He will have access to a 4.3 musser at the high school but he's only in the 6th grade and it's 2 years away.
Thanks, Jim P

If you don't have space for a DeMorrow, then go with the 4.3 padouk marimba. That will suit him just fine for a practice instrument. A xylophone just won't do for the 4-mallet pieces like Yellow, you need the sustain of a marimba.
My marimba is the 4 octave synthetic bar Windsor II by Musser. It was the only thing I could afford (not nearly the choices there are today). It did OK, I was able to learn on it, but the narrow bars and synthetic sound are not too conducive to serious playing. I use it in my 6th beginner class now just to give them exposure to a full size instrument as opposed to their practice bells.
