Has anybody ever seen "Under the Table and Drumming" by Carter Beauford? I won it from this forum a couple of months ago and it hasn't left my dvd player since. This guy is amazing, and everybody should get it if you don;t already have it.

Do any stores sell it for less than $60? Dave Matthews Band is my favorite group and I have studied a few of Beauford's parts, but I just don't have $60 to spend on a DVD.

Yes I've seen it, I paid 60 bucks for the two tapes, way too expensive in my opinion. And a bit overrated... anyway.
If your a fan of his you'll love it.

I don't know what Rittermethod doesn't like about this video. It's one of the best videos I've seen if not the best. This guy is unbelivable and has a unique way of playing that I absolutly love. Carter went from being a nobody to me to a very VERY respected player. It's AWESOME!!

I agree. Carter Beauford is an awesome drummer. For those of you who don't have the $60 to spend on a dvd, check out some of his clips on drummerworld.com Click on the "sounds" tab and find his name. I'm sure you'll be impressed with what you hear.
Here is my feeling on Beauford's playing:
Although not the greatest drummer ever seen, Carter Beauford is nowhere near the worst. His playing style has influenced many professional and non-pro drummers in many ways. As a drummer and a musician, I feel playing the drums is not just hitting a head to make a cool beat. Just as you would with any other instrument playing the drums requires a certain sense and feel of the song. Carter Beauford expresses his music in a dynamic way in solo work and with DMB. He has the right feel for his style of music, and is greatly appreciated by all of his fans. As not just a drummer, but a piano player, bass guitar and electric guitar player, I feel that playing with Beauford would be a great privilage. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to your music.

Carter what can i say..
If anybody has to be a drummer that I give 150% attention to its carter. In my opinion the video is a great buy because you can get into the mind of a man born a child prodigy and naturally ambidextrous. If you are intersted in more of his approach to playing drums rather than it be another digital drum lesson then this is video for you. I myself am working more on being a left hand lead player although I'm a natural right handed person. I analyze and draw a lot of inspiration from this video to work toward my goal. Also there are ways to obtain this video and not pay full price, I got mine on Ebay for 40 dollars. Just have to get lucky

I have to agree - The Carter Beauford video is one of my favorites. One of the things I like best about him is his ability to develop great grooves to great songs. I'm a Dave Matthews fan but that doesn't take away from Carter's innovative style - a mix of jazz and rock that help to distinguish DMB sound from all othes.
Another reason I treasure this video is that the DMB and Carter in particular inspired me to play drums again. After a hiatus of 20+ years while I was in the military, I really got into the DMB unique sound and grabbed everything I could on them. Eventually I decided to pick up an old, used set to start playing in my basement with the stereo - yeah with DMB and others. Now 6 years (and 4 drum sets) later I'm enjoying drums as never before, playing a regular gig with a country band, and developing skills I never had back in the 60's when I started playing. I'm able to buy the toys I could never afford before (when in high school) and am now looking to branch out into playing other instruments. I'm now in my fifties and in part, thank Carter for getting me back into drumming.

Under the table and dreaming is an awsome video. A little to much talk about the Band. I have Vhs version and find I fast forward through alot of it. Another awsome DVD is Listener Supported. I leanrned a lot from watching this video a million times. Great shots of Carter's Kit also. Listener Supported is also way better then the other two DVD's by far but live in Central park is a close second.

I watched it (Under the table and Drumming) the other night and well.. I'd give it 3 stars out of five. Carter's a great drummer and imparts some useful information but it didn't really do it for me. His verbal explanations are painfully slow and not explanatory, something like ' this would be easier to explain or demonstrate by actually playing the pattern using this technique...um .. I will now demonstrate the pattern for you in a live playing context.. ' Couldn't he just say "Here's an example!"
and his examples are usually preceded by a long rythmic introduction, like a simple beat.. and you're waiting and waiting until finally.. oh there it is!
Other that there's not a lot of meat on the dvd; compared to Steve Smith's masterpiece (for about the same price). On the plus side, Carter has some great licks and rythmns and I really enjoyed his section on the 4 stroke roll, which he attributes to Billy Cobham. This is something close to my heart as I've been borrowing these Billy Cobham roll(s) for 20+ years and it was nice to hear someone actually document Billy's influence and technique.
So to sum up, I didn't get anything from Carters dialog (next time he should work from a script and provide consise meaningful explanations), although the close up video of him actually playing is awesome to watch.. its more up to the viewer to figure out what the heck he is doing by observing him play.
