MY NAME: Joel Stovall MY LOCATION: A small Northern California town halfway between Redding, CA and Reno, Nevada MY OCCUPATION: Retired now - former U.S. Marine, former high school English teacher, former newspaper editor, currently a cover band commando, aka weekend warrior MY BAND: Slant Six, a five-piece country cover band MY WEBSITE: n/a MY FIRST INSPIRATION: When I was five or six, my teenaged sister played for me Sandy Nelson's "Teen Beat" and I was instantly hooked. MY MUSIC STYLES: Currently modern country. In the past I have played what is now called classic rock, Top 40, and blues. MY SUPPORT/MENTOR: No mentor - my biggest supporter is my wife. MY STORY: Born in 1952, grew up listening to, and playing, pop and rock music of the 1960s. I bought my first kit in 1968 and played in a cover band for the last couple of years of high school, coverinig music by the Beatles, Stones, Cream, Doors, Steppenwolf, Creedence, Buffalo Springfield. My earliest influences were drummers from that era: Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, John Densmore, Ron Bushy and, of course, Hal Blaine and, a little later, John Bonham. I stopped playing drums after high school to spend 7 years in the military, played again during four years of college, stopped again, then started up again after retirement in 1998, and have been playing in one band or another (both classic rock and country) since then. My current band, Slant Six, has been together for a little more than two years.
MY GEAR: My gigging kit is a 5-piece Tama Starclassic Performer EFX kit in Sterling Silver Sparkle. I also have a practice kit, a Mapex Saturn Pro 5-piece. I use Zildjian cymbals and a mix of Shure, AKG and Audix mics. I'll try to post some pics of both my kits and my band:
