Vibraphone 4 mallet grip.

Hi, I've been playing 4 mallet marimba for some time now, I'm first year in a percussion performance major, and in orchestra, I have a lot of Vibe parts. I was wondering if you think it's worth while to switch from Stevens-musser style of grip to burton for vibes, thanks.

Give it a try, but don't feel obligated to use the Burton grip on vibes. There have been many great vibraphonists who use non-Burton grips, including:

- the late Red Norvo (traditional grip)
- Joe Locke (Musser grip)
- Mike Mainieri (I believe his is the old George Lawrence Stone grip).

IMO, the idea that "this grip is for marimba, and that grip is for vibes," is a myth. Use what suits your hands the best.

I agree with James.
If you are comfortable with Stevens technique, you can apply it quite well to vibes.

I use Stevens on both marimba and vibes.
Doug Walter uses Burton on both vibes and marimba.

Try both, see which fits you.
