My Jazz Vibes Duo.
      #42196 - Fri Mar 28 2008 08:00 PM (71.59.56.72)

A piano friend of mine and I were playing in the chapel of a local college this week, and some of the jazz came out nice enough for me to decide to at last show my vibes sensitive side on the Internet.

It's of course the same Moanin that used to be performed all the time by Art Blakey.
Hope you like it.

Great job & tune selection, Matt! I enjoyed your performance enough to go learn it for myself.

Very nice. I may have to go learn that one myself.

Thank you for the positive reinforcement.

I've been meaning to check out the link - and I finally got around to it this morning. (That's not a commentary on you, Matt - it's the fact that I'm still on a dial-up connection, and checking out YouTube videos usually requires that I do something to kill time while it downloads. One of these days, I'll get a high-speed connection...and maybe while I'm at it, I'll get a car that doesn't have a crank on the front, and maybe even indoor plumbing...but I digress.)

You've got some really good stuff going on there - I'm hearing good, melodic use of repetition, and references to the melody in your solo lines. I also like hearing rolls used on vibraphone - it's an interesting texture that often gets discarded, because one doesn't have to roll to sustain a note on vibes, the way one does on marimba.

Nice job!

Thanks, well it's been a good couple of weeks from the playing end. I was able to break Mangini's trad grip world record, started my first term at the Atlanta Institute of Music, got third place in the Rising Star category of the Drum Magazine Reader's Poll, and won the Slapstik contest where I got some cash for school and a new video commercial playing with Dennis Chambers and Kenwood Dennard. Thanks again.
