We've decided the current name of our band has to change. We've had a couple of line up changes and the music has also become "softer" (but not in a boy band way let me hasten to add!) Potential names are: Rocket Monkey Space Monkey Monkey Science The Vacant Lot The Random Heroes Cover Charge Flip Side Rock'n'Ruin
A couple there that I think are horrible, but at the end of the day I particularly care that much. I'm sick of thinking about it. So let me have your thoughts on any of the above names...
Cheers

Of these, I like Rock'n'Ruin, but I have to ask: What's with all the Monkey names? Also, what's the current (soon to be former) name of your band, and what kind of music do you play?

One of the guitarists went to London for work and he came back with an effects pedal call "Bad Monkey". And everyone went OOh Aaah what a good name for a band.. but the name was taken already by a local Aust band. So the monkey thing was trying to play on that and see what came out. The previous name was NVR2L8 (like never too late and the band logo became a number plate with NVR2L8) That came about as everyone in the band is 40+++ and the standing joke was that it was never to late to start the world tour. But we think its a bit too self depreciating and pidgeon holes us into a bunch of geriatrics.
We just do covers at the moment The previous set list looked like Garry Moore Still Got the Blues Hoodoo Gurus Miss Freelove '69 The Angels Take a Long Line Daddy Cool Eagle Rock ZZ Top Gimme All your loving Billy Idol White Wedding AC/DC Highway To Hell, Long way to the top Jackie Wilson Sweetest feeling Joe Jackson Look Sharp Eagles Desperado Eagles Heartache Tonight Eagles How Long Matchbox 20 Let's see how far we've come Reef Place Your Hands Foo Fighters Learning To Fly Coldplay Hardest Part The Church Under The Milky Way AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long Bernard Fanning I Wish You well Aerosmith Walk this Way Screaming Jets Better Ugly Kid Joe I hate everything about you Stevie Ray Vaughn This House is Rocking Stray Cats Rock This Town Stray Cat Strut Paul Kelly Before Too Long Hootie and the Blowfish I only wanna be with you Can't remember the rest...
But now its more Fleetwood Mac Melissa Etheridge Patti Smith Dixie Chics Plus some of the older stuff above that fits in on the night with the new girls voice.
Of the list I also liked Rock n Ruin. That came when I picked up one of the guitarists after work on the day some kind soul smashed into my car in the car park and drove away leaving me with a three grand work of damages ($1,000 bucks for the wing mirror of a mercedes.. your kidding me... do I get a trip to Germany to pick it up?... anyway I digress).. so he asked what happened to the car I started raving about the whole world going to Rack and Ruin!.. Ooh Aaah good name for a band Rock n Ruin.

oh please stay away from anything "monkey"! there's a local band around here called "the butler monkeys" and they wear monkey masks whyle they play! just horrifying. and way back when, a friend i was in a band with when we were kids(the 80's) wanted to name our band "the splash monkeys". i like "rock-n-ruin" but that denotes heavier music. don't you guys have a favorite line in a favorite tune of the bands?

One suggestion is to look at song lyrics and titles. For example, years ago I was in a band that played a lot of Doors songs and we called ourselves "Dawn's Highway," a phrase used in "The Ghost Song." Another guy I know was in a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band known as "The Breeze." You get the idea....

I like Rocket Monkey - just because it has Rock in it, and isin't a 'the' band.
Make sure whatever you decide is not already being used, i.e., web search and trade mark search. I've run into trade mark problems before and it can get expensive - best to avoid the whole thing. To be safe, register the name, or at least retain documentation/posters/etc that proves common law usage i.e., you had it first on date;---. - a good FREE method is to print a band poster, or contract, or something that proves you were using the name commercially - put it in an envelope and mail it to yourself. If you ever get hauled into court, let the judge open it. Case closed!
Or even waving said envelope in the challengers face might be enough to make them run for the hills. Whoever thought the postal service would be so useful? In Canada the cost of a stamp is mainly for storage..
..and you'll probably want to snag the domain name.. a quick test shows that rocketmonkey is already taken.. Names are hard to find that haven't been taken and that eveyone likes. It usually comes down to one person making the decision - 'here's one that is available, its pretty catchy and this is it!' Otherwise it will churn forever.. Good luck!

Stuart,
Also be aware of the Law of Unintended Consequences when choosing a band name. For instance, "Dawn's Highway" was an all-male band, and it wasn't long before we got VERY tired of people asking us "Who's Dawn?" and "Where's Dawn?"
Another example: A few years ago I was in a country band called Smith & Wheeler, which were the last names of our lead singers (and also a take-off on the gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson). After a while, because his name came first, Mr. Smith began thinking of it as HIS band, as in SMITH!!....& wheeler, even though Mr. Wheeler was a better singer and frontman. Mr. Smith actually started comparing and complaining about the number of songs each one sang, as in: "Hey, he's got 34 songs and I've only got 33. That doesn't seem very fair." Sigh.....
Getting back to ripping off song lyrics....if I ever get in another classic rock band, I'd like to call it Tramps Like Us...stolen, of course, from Springsteen's "Born to Run." Just an idea....unless, and this would be my luck, Tea Bag or somebody like him already has that one copyrighted!

I love monkeys and any movie with a monkey in it, moves up a notch with me -LOL!
My Favorite band name? Hot Monkey Love (a blues band that stole my catch phrase 4 "let's get it on..."!)
Those Monkey names are pretty generic and SciFi/techie. Join Monkey with more non-associative things like monkey /butter/spread/nutz, apes lovin' grapes, orangutangina, chocolate chimps cookies, (uh ohh, I must be hungry....)
OK, OK, I like Rock'N'Ruin the best, too!

I guess at the end of the day, it's your whole band who have to decide - do you all agree on one? If not, eliminate the ones you don't like, and then work from there. The teachers' band at school was called "Eastern Front" until recently - we had a Russian pianist and a German lead guitarist, and the crazy German suggested the name. His Dad actually was fighting on the eastern front. The name just seemed to stick, and it amused the other band members!
