OK, here's the latest entry in Jim's "odd sized equipment" brigade - they'll go nicely with the 16" bass drum, the 15" snare drum, and the 24" ride cymbal. (Seriously - they really will! )
I just picked up a set of 15" New Beats on eBay. The seller said they're from the '70s - damned if I can tell (the ink logos are long gone, and I'm not up on my stamp history), but to my untrained eye they look the same as my '70s 14" New Beats.

Do any of you guys have 15" hi-hats? These are the first I've ever played, of any make/model - but I'm really digging them. The "chick" sound is rock solid, and the fuller sound (compared to my 14s) goes beautifully with my darker-sounding ride cymbals.
Is there something special about the 15" size, or did I simply luck into some nice cymbals that "happen to be" 15"?

i have some 15" sweet hats. more that likely you found a nice pair of hats that happen to be 15". mine sound great just as you explained yours, but i just figured mine were great hats that happen to be 15" too. i wanted mine for a lower note and was surpriced at how good they groove. but i have some 14s that sound similar too! nice find.

Thanks, AD! I've also experimented with the Max Roach thing, taking my 15" bottom hat and combining it with my 14" New Beat top. (I don't recall if Max's combo was 15/14, or 14/13 - but I know he used a mismatched combo at least once in a while.) It's an interesting mix - keeping most of the fullness of the "chick" sound, but making the stick response faster.
A local store has a 15" Quick Beat bottom for sale - it has been sitting on the display rack for over a year now. I assume it's "used" - how often does one find a brand new bottom hi-hat cymbal for sale without the top? I'm intrigued, to say the least, but IMO he's asking too much for my tastes - $175, if I remember my last visit correctly. I'm curious, but I'm not THAT curious.
(Maybe I'll just bring my 15s down, and ask to test-drive the QB bottom...)
Before I found these New Beats on eBay, I was giving serious consideration to picking up the bottom QB, and then either hunting down a top, or commissioning a cymbalsmith like Mike Skiba to craft a top cymbal to match. I may still do that...you know, when I strike it rich.

Nice demo, James. They sound very full. In the later part where you move from the ride to the open hats, they sound big enough to be consider a ride! Really rich sound. Oh, and the ride itself is jaw-droppingly gorgeous :).

Thanks! While I've only played them at home (I haven't taken them out on a gig yet), I'm pleasantly surprised at how versatile they are - "riding" included.
There are actually two rides on the sound file. The first ride is my 22" pre-serial Paiste 602. At around the 0:50 mark, I move to my 24" PS 602, and later I move back to the 22. These larger rides are one reason why I was so curious to try 15" hats - and IMO they all match up beautifully. Add my 20" A Zildjian pang on the far right, and I think I've found my straight-ahead jazz setup.

It was the 24" that made my jaw drop, then!

I LOVE the 15" Paiste 'Sound Edge' hi-hat cymbals so much that I use them on both of my acoustic sets. The sound edge is rippled giving a loud chink, yet is not muffled at all by any air pressure build-up, because those ripples also allow the air to vent easily. They're the finest sounding hi-hat cymbals I have ever heard. They really cut through.

FWIW, there's more about my 24" ride in this thread, also in the "Member Reviews" section of the forum. She's a sweety, that's for sure.
