I mentioned a while back that I didn't believe any of those far fetched rumours that the Beatles sometimes used unnamed session guys to lay down some drum tracks (like Bernard Purdie's weird claim). I also mentioned that out of all of the Beatles tunes (and I know them all inside out as I am a confirmed Beatlemaniac!) there was only one that struck me as odd - as it didn't sound like Ringo; and the stick work on it was very fast and intricate. The song in question was I Feel Fine, which has a fast syncopated bell pattern coupled with x-stick alternating between snare and toms and a simple but cool foot pattern..
Okay, so now I'm reading this voluminous biography of Paul Mcartney and in one chapter Paul says something like 'one of the reasons we chose Ringo over Pete Best was that at the time Ray Carles had a big hit with 'What'd You Say' which had a fast latin kind of vibe - which the Beatles really liked; and Ringo had those patterns down cold - which blew them away'.
So as far as I'm concerned - it's case closed! Ringo's da man!

Tea Bag: I've heard those rumours, too. I've also heard Ringo himself say, on VH1 Storytellers, that he did not play the drums on "Love Me Do," the reason being that he had just joined the Beatles, they had already booked studio time to record that song, and George Martin didn't know Ringo from Adam, so Martin chose instead a session drummer that he was familiar with. That drummer was Alan White, who several years later became a member of Yes.
The only other Beatles track that I'm aware of that Ringo didn't play the drums on was "Back in the USSR" - that was Paul, because Ringo was out of the country at the time.
All the rest is rumours, and I'm with you and Roger - Ringo is da man!
P.S. Not to be critical here, but the Ray Charles song you referenced is "What'd I Say," not "What'd You Say."

I had heard, (again, probably rumor), that Paul had over-dubbed Ringo's drums on several occassions in the latter ONO years, when they were all fighting.

The other day on a Who Documentary, they mentioned using Ringo's kid for a drummer. I don't know how long he played with them, but he must be pretty good to even get the job. I doubt his Dad could have covered that gig.

Not to go to far off topic but out of interest, according to Wikipedia, "(both) Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey stated that he (Zak) is the best drummer The Who has had since the death of Moon in 1978."

i heard that too pljones. i was also watching an interveiw with ringo where they were asking him about zak. ringo said all he taught zak was the old boom-chick! a year or so later he was going to sho him something else but zak was already better than him. and don't for get ringo and moonie were friends, and an interview with zak in MD zak said moonie was like an uncle to him. zak would ask moonie alot of questions about drumming. i don't think there was any sort of "lesson" per-say.

Different styles for different music! Keith wouldn't have fitted into the Beatles either.

very true! that just proves how each member including the drummer contributes to the overall sound of their band!

Billy Cobham would have been great in the Beatles. (Huh? Oh, a joke.)
