4-Mallets on a Drumset?
      #44488 - Thu Mar 05 2009 02:59 PM (71.2.247.198)

As a music major in Paterson State College (now William Paterson College) I learned the 4-mallet method of playing marimba/vibes under Ray DesRoche. Later, I adapted the 4 mallet technique for use on the drumset. I've seen Billy Cobham do something similar. Has anyone ever tried something like this on the kit? If so, what did you think of it?

Not sure what that is. Is it like the 4-stick playing Louie Bellson used to do?

I've used a four-mallet (four stick) approach on drum set a few times when playing in the pit for musicals, if I need two different types of sticks and I don't have time to switch. I'll hold two sticks for playing the kit, but I'll also hold two vibe mallets for (for instance) a mallet roll on a suspended cymbal...or two bell mallets plus drum set sticks, etc.
