20" Diril Raw Ride
      #45869 - Tue Dec 15 2009 11:31 AM (99.36.6.37)

I recently promised my wife and myself (not necessarily in that order) that I'd tone down the cymbal acquisitions for a while, and for the time being just go with the cymbals I already own. However, I couldn't pass this one up when I found it for sale second-hand in a local store.

It's a 20" Diril Raw Ride. I don't have a scale, but the weight marked underneath the bell is 1680g. It's dry, but not so dry as to be sterile, and it opens up quite nicely when crashed. It has a very quick decay, as one would expect from an unlathed cymbal like this.

And the obligatory hideous sound files:

cymbal by itself

cymbal on the kit

I wondered when you would go after a Diril. Nice rich sound, pretty dark for a Turk type cymbal.I have access to a Byzance Turk if I want. Same character of sound, but then again it is one of the early Byzance and was made by Diril.

This is actually my second Diril. I ended up keeping the 22" "Jazz" ride that was one of the cymbals I reviewed here on the forum last Spring. (If I'd had the money, I would have kept the hats and ride, too.)

As one might expect, this Diril and my 22" Diril Jazz Ride sound great together.

20" Diril Raw ride, followed by 22" "Jazz" ride

I think the raw ride is an earlier model, because it has the Diril logo stamped into the metal, and my 22" ride doesn't. (The US distributor for Diril is an acquaintance - I'll have to ask him if I'm reading this correctly.)

I'm really impressed by the Dirils I've tried thus far, and the 22" ride is only getting better with age, in terms of sound as well as feel under the stick.

Here we go - much happier. Two Bosphorus rivets, one Agop rivet:

I've heard many a drummer state the opinion that dry rides are good candidates for rivets - and since this sure is a dry ride, I thought it might be worth a shot.

I spent a bit of time this morning messing around with a couple of rattle chains, some coins taped to the cymbal, and some rivets tied to a string. Sometimes, I take a while to decide if I want to install rivets, but this one took to the sound right away. It really was a no-brainer, once I did a few experiments.

I really like the results. To my ear, this ride has gone from an "interesting alternate ride" (maybe something to use on the far right side of a jazz kit, or behind bass solos, etc.) to a ride that can serve as a primary ride.

Well, when I looked at the original photo I was looking for rivets. I have a prototype Zildjian Left side ride that somehow was left in Canada at the St. FX University jazz facutly back in the very early 90s by peter Erskine so I am told. It's a lot different than the ones on the market today. It has three of those older Zildjian heavy rivets in it and sounds a dead ringer for your Diril actually. It's such an early protoype that although it has the K label on it, it there is no serial number. I love those Turk type cymbals with three rivets installed. It came with a pair of 13" K custom dry 13" hi-hats from the same era and probably from the same PAS clinic that Erskine did up there at that time. I also have a first generation A Zildjian & Cie Armand 20" ride that appeared in the same lot. The latter was definitley built on an A blank but tooled as they tool the Constantinoples of today. I use a Constantinople 16" as a crash and my Serpent to round out set-up and I'll tell you, I haven't touched any other cymbals lying around here since I put that combination together.

Roger,

This one definitely does put me in mind of the Erskine LSRs I've tried, although this one is much lighter.

I don't get to do many straight-ahead jazz gigs, so talk of "my jazz setup(s)" can ring hollow sometimes. That having been said, just in messing around with this cymbal the past few days, I could easily see using this on the left, the 22" Diril as the main, and one of my china/pang cymbals over on the right...or a flat ride on the right...or...(etc., etc., etc.)

I've also got an 18" Bosphorus crash and 14" New Beats that definitely fall under the "Tell me again, why do I need any other cymbals?" category, and which go fabulously with these Dirils.

I use the setup I mentioned above with the addition of my old Paiste signature 10" splash and my Paiste cup chime, for just about everything I play at this point. I put both rides on my right hand side with the Armand beast in the main position and the LH ride half tucked in below the main ride. When it comes to crashing for those pay the mortgage pop/rock things I get enveigled into from time to time I'd probably add a second smaller Serpent off the ride over the floor(s) and stack another Connie on a short stacker above it. Or move my 16" connie over there and mount an 18" Connie on the left hand side. The only other piece of percussion that is standard on my kit at all times besides the Serpent is my LP chimes. Can't live without those in any kind of music. I can run from 4 - 6pce in drums so that changes around from time to time. I have a steady playing 4 pce band in both Jazz and Blues and pick up what one calls a lot of generic type playing around here, and I'm starting to work with four symphony players and a great guitarist who wanted a drummer that has jazz chops but is open to working with strings. What I have with cymbals really works for them. You should hear this lot do "Spain".
By the way, my now old computer blitzed its hard drive and I lost my whole address book. Like an idiot I didn't back that item up. Lost your email address in the debacle. I have some questions about stuff for you.
