And now for something completely different, a dose of reality. American capitalist medicine is the most expensive medicine in the world. Americans spend almost 20% of their GDP (gross domestic product) on medicine. That is, almost one out of every 5 dollars spent in America is for medicine.
And what do we get for this gargantuan investment:
(1) Medical care in America is the third leading cause of death. Over 300,000 Americans are killed every year from medical treatment. Only heart attacks (over 500,000), and cancer (over 350,000) cause more deaths in America than medicine. The three deadliest elements of American medicine are (a) FDA approved drugs, (b) hospital acquired infections and (c) medical malpractic. Death caused by FDA approved drugs, alone, in the 4th leading cause of death in America. Approximately, 110,000 people are killed by FDA approved drugs every year. This only include deaths that occur in hospitals, not in the community, and does not include misdosing, misdiagnosing or misprescribing. In other words, your doctor gives you a prescription for an FDA approved drug, in the correct dose, for the indicated reason, AND IT KILLS YOU, is the 4th leading cause of death. This also does not include approximately 2 million serious non-fatal adverse drug reactions every year in America. Hospital acquired infections (typically MRSA infections), kill over 100,000 Americans every year. Medical malpractice kills just under 100,000 Americans every year. And this does not include non-fatal injuries resulting from medical malpractice.
(2) Medical bills are the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in America. More people file for personal bankruptcy in America THAN FOR ALL OTHER REASONS COMBINED!
(3) The World Health Organization ranks the U.S. medical system 37th in the world in terms of the overall health of its citizens including such factors as live expectancy, preventable death and cost.
(4) The U.S. is the ONLY industrialized country in the world that does not have universal medical care.

The example shown in the link has nothing to do with 'socialized medicine'; you can find incompetence in any kind of health system.. and don't listen to any of those idiot right-wing republicans who think they know anything about Canada's health system - they don't! Some of the ridiculous nonsense that wafts over the border from some of those nutjobs is nothing more than vote-buying mis-information. For the record, the national health care system up here works very well - for everyone.
Obama is on the right track - Palin should be put on one that leads out of the country! What a total dufus she is! Why do some think that the most important job in the country should be held by someone who is totally unqualified, uneducated, and basically not the sharpest tool in the shed?

If Canada has such a great and efficient system, why do many Canadians come to the U.S. for medical care. Is it because they can be seen and treated right away? Are the stories of canadians being in a lottery pool to see who gets the next appointment with a doctor false? Is waiting 6 to 9 months for an MRI false? I watched a show where the Canadians interviewed were saying these things. After all, if your system is so great, why do any Canadians come here for medical procedures? By the way, Obama is a socialist and Palin is not. Socialism's end result is bankrupting the countries it serves. Looked at Greece lately? The U.S. through the IMF is giving these dumb bastards tons of money along with Germany and others to put a temporary fix on a failed system that doesn't work. Welcome to the land of dumb and dumber.

This is a rare occurence - it's usually people that are desperate and willing to spend huge $$ for either a specialist that is tops in their field or some procedure that is not available here (which is also rare).

Not true either.. it depends on need..Look if I need a doctor I can see my family doctor anytime, depending on his schedule I can usually get an appointment within the week (if not days). However if it's an immediate need, I can walk 5 minutes to the nearby walk-in clinic and see a doctor in less than an hour.

If you look hard enough you can always find anomalies. I recall one person saying that on US news - and it turned out that the procedure they wanted was easily available in lot's of places in Canada..
I worked with a scientist from the US who actually moved to Canada in order to get free (or reasonably priced) universal healthcare as her family had a history of medical problems - and she would have eventually had to sell her house and declare bankruptcy... so it works both ways.
Look at the end of the day both US and Canada have first class health care systems.. the only difference is here everyone pays a bit through taxes; in the US it's through private health plans.. what we don't do is throw people out on the street if they can't afford a plan..

I'm not a socialist - far from it. No one wants government controlling everything; because they aren't capable.. but if you don't have a social safety net to catch those that are unfortunate, then what kind of society have you got? Hands down there are some things that government does better than private enterprise and vice versa. I get the impression that when you use the term 'socialism' you equate it with 'communism'..and a red under every bed Lol!
..and BTW - it's called Public Health Care; Socialized health care is a term the extreme right came up with to try to scare people into thinking the Russians are landing on your shores!
Greece is a basket case, as are several other European countries, as they swung the pendulum to far to the left.. the trick is to find the sweetspot where public and private enterprise do things that are best suited to each.

In socialized medical systems, the doctors work directly for the state. In Canada (and many other countries with universal care), doctors run their own private practices, just like they do in the US. The only difference is that every doctor deals with one insurer, instead of 150. And that insurer is the provincial government, which is accountable to the legislature and the voters if the quality of coverage is allowed to slide.
The proper term for this is "single-payer insurance." In talking to Americans about it, the better phrase is "Medicare for all."
