I recently purchased a new Pearl Free Floating Copper shell snare and the tuning lugs have these really thick plastic "washers" that made tuning by tension of the lugs quite difficult for me so I picked up a drum head tension measuring tool called "Drum Dial". Tama also makes one except I think the graduations are finer than Drum Dials are. It took me about 30 minutes to tune my 5 piece kit and I did it with a minimal of the ratatat-tat of the sticks. Getting the head tension equal at all tuning lug positions is paramount to getting a drum in tune and this dial makes it so easy to do that. The tool measures head tension and has a distance gauge to place the dial at a specific space from the tuning lugs. Last night we played one of our road gigs, and for that gig I have a different drum kit and its a 4 piece kit and this time things went a lot faster, due to tuning the 5 piece kit the night before. Its a helpful tool but ultimately, it all comes back to the "Ears".
