I recently purchased a new snare that has thick plastic washers on the tuning lugs and it made tuning by lug tension difficult for me so I picked up a tool that measures head tension. It came with a gauge for setting the tool 3/4 an inch from each tuning lug and frankly, it was the fastest I ever tuned a drum and I did it with minimal rattat-tat with the sticks, which greatly pleased the rest of the guys in the band. With the rest of the kit ( bought new in 1992 ) it went very quickly as most lugs were pretty close but not one drum was spot on the same head tension at each lug position. It took 30 minutes to do the 5 piece kit and then last night I played my 4 piece road kit and retuned it in about 15 minutes. Getting equal head tension at each lug position really makes a big difference in the sound of a drum but ultimately, it all comes down to your "Ears"; the tool just gives you a quick precise starting point. I listed the tool in the other section but thought this "Method" of drum tuning might help some of you cats.

OK, here it comes. All drum heads have inconsistencies in manufacture. Also not all drum shells have precise bearing edges and after a few years bearing edges CAN wear. getting each lug at the same tension doesn't guarantee that the drum head will be consistent SONICALLY throughout. I have a little item in my stick bag made by Steve Croteau of Serpent cymbals called simply "the woolee". It looks like the simplest little item you could ever come across but it is made with a lot of care and intelligence as far as weight and materials. I believe a five tab container of Moongel costs more actually. It works specifically to the sonic tuning rather than the mechanical tuning of a head and IT REALLY WORKS beleive me. Awfulldrummer, you'd love this little thing. Once you have set up the original tuning on any drum with this little puppy it is a snap to keep it exactly where your ears want it and your hands feel the drum. Those who are interested in this little sweetheart should contact Steve Croteau at either info@serpentcymbals.com or stevesdrumshop@comcast.net Once you get over the shock of the simplicity of the woolee you'll love it. By the way Steve is centered in Spokane Washington.
