Yamaha Oak Custom kit...Now, for the Heads???
      #46965 - Mon Jul 19 2010 12:35 PM (76.198.254.113)

Today I ordered a new Yamaha Oak Custom kit (22" kick w/ 10 - 12 - 14 racks and 16 floor. shell pack w/o snare). Im playing traditional country, 50s and early 60s rock, big band swing and western swing with a not really loud 5 piece dance band...the bandstand is carpeted and there is a sound deadening 4 foot wall right next to me.
What would my choices be for heads that will tame the loud and Lively Oaks but still allow the shells to resonate.

why would you want to tame those oaks? yamaha's stock heads are remos. they're fairly good heads. but if you must any two ply head will do. evans imo do the most "taming". good luck and enjoy, i'm jealous i want an oak set.

Oak is very cool especially from Yamaha. We've talked about this before and I still say that if you are looking for richness and retaining all the properies in the durms, give Aquarian coated Focus-X a whirl. I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Thats exactly what you told me earlier and so I took your advice and they are shipping the kit tomorrow, along with the Focus X heads. I just wanted to see what some of the other guys might suggest. Steve suggested the Studio X but since I already had a new Focus X that I had tried on the copper...I pretty well had an idea of how they would sound on the Oaks.
I also got the Emad Coated for the kick which was your suggestion as well. Steve said the Woolee was shipped Saturday so it should arrive before the end of the week.
I will also post a pic of it for those who might be curious and or intersted in getting one for themselves.
