John Riley's Sprint Exercise
      #47057 - Fri Oct 01 2010 03:18 AM (81.226.206.20)

Hi Guys. Long time since i posted but i'd like to share this with yall: In his book "The Art of Bebop", John Riley published an excellent exercise for building speed called the Sprint Exercise. The story behind it is : In order to play fast you have to practise fast. Basically he applied this for the Ridecymbal. But i applied it for both of the hands.

So lets say Your peak is 144 bpm 16th notes for 10 minutes single strokes, You will put the metronome up 10 klicks and do this: Play 8 bars of 8th notes, then play 16 bars of 16th notes. Then down to 8th notes again. This is the "Recoveryperiod" and the Sprint is the 16th notes.

Apply this Formula to your current status, ie wherever your Level is at the time. Its an excellent method for building speed and relaxation. Try it out.

Good Luck Guys

Cheers!

Perfect timing (sic) -- I'm about to start work on my kick timing and speed, so this tip is likely to come in really useful! :)

That's the same thinking Morello uses in his "fill-ins" in Master studies. You're thinking of the 8ths only and filling in the other side.

I totally agree! The most effective way to build speed is to play short bursts at high speeds and keep tabs in a notebook on your progress - Your body/mind likes to see progress!

For endurance, play at slower tempos but for longer periods of time, nonstop.

If you're into Tension Free principles and have them built into your muscle memory, then you'll easily be able to hold higher speeds for longer periods of time without breaking a sweat. And the longer you play, the more relaxed you become.

I enjoy watching DVDs. So, to kill 2 birds, I'll hold a single stroke roll or any type of rudiment or sticking pattern non-stop at high speed for the length of the movie, which is usually 90 to 120 mins. At the end I feel better than when I started because my tendons and muscles are looser and more relaxed from the workout!

Single strokes for 90-120 minutes? If I did that my wife would clobber me with a mallet..

Haw. That's why I have a drum space on the bottom floor of our house and also why my teaching studios are sound proofed!!
I do nutty things like putting on let's say Beethoven's 5th and just roll through the whole symphony while it's playing in it's entirety with singles, doubles and press rolls using accents. Although I'm not a dedicated classical buff like my Father was, when he willed me his classical collection I figured I'd better put it to good use in a drumistic way.

Those principles apply to athletic activities such as cycling and running too. As drummers, we are the athletes of the band anyway; the only difference between drumming and endurance training is the forum in which we do it.

In real exercising that is called interval training. I will
have to try this on the drums. Thanks
