Now that's interesting. I've used brake drums from the 60s and back to make chromatic sounds but never thought of using grinding wheels.

I can guess what an instrument like this might sound like (I've got a couple of grinding wheels by my workbench), but I'd love to track down a recording from one of the radio shows mentioned in the caption.

I saw a documentary on a 'junkyard band' a while ago - all the instruments were made from found things; it worked surprisingly well.

Now that I look at them.. they're kind of like the early ancestor of electronic pads - but from the 'stone age'.. probably the first thing they tried after inventing the wheel!
