Poll: where do you put the butt end?
      #47102 - Thu Dec 09 2010 11:01 AM (129.42.208.182)

Now that I've got your attention; this is a question about -matched grip and where you position the butt of your stick in your hands.

In the traditional German grip the butt lies sticking out towards the edge of the palm-side of your hand. The other option (which was taught to me a long time ago as the American grip) is positioning the butt of the stick right down the middle of the palm - in the crease between the thumb and the palm.

Note: the poll wizard won't allow changes, and when I originally entered it , it read 'Mixed, for example; ...'. But the abbreviation I used disappeared when posted ( must have interpreted it as a code). In any case, just read it as MIXED.
Where's the butt?
You may choose only one
Off to the side of the palm
Straight down the middle of the palm
Mixed, middle palm for righthand on cymbal and palm side for left hand

About halfway between my wrist and little finger.
The other option is 'on a chair'...

I just realised it varies with what direction I'm "throwing" the stick. The butt's pointing down my arm if I'm throwing straight ahead, it's out the side of my hand if I'm throwing off to the opposite-hand side and it's about half-way between if I'm going for the same-hand side. At least with my right..!

That's true..I find my grip shifts a bit sometimes depending on what I'm playing. I also find I get a snappier sound when the butt is down the middle of the palm.. It aligns the 2nd finger fulcrum with the 1st finger nicely so it seems like a perfect rocker mechanism to me.

The butt normally lies in the middle of my palm on both sticks when I'm playing matched. Players who use traditional Moeller would have the butt sticking out over the outside edge of the palm.

I was waiting for something like that. In matched, depending on the Music and dynamics I do both. Most of the time the butt end is out just over the edge of my palms, but at times, if it feels right and relaxed, I can let the butt move into my hand.
Many stick models today are built to be fulcrumed 1/4 up the shaft rather than the traditional 1/3 of past decades.
It's not a conscious thing that I check that much as long as I am doing the music the way it should be done. As long as I have no tension anywhere in my body, which is basically all the time, I can serve the Music the way it has been written and arranged.
Since I use both matched and traditional grips through any performance, it follows that the left hand traditional grip I use also varies as to where my fulcrum (where the stick seats in my hand), also varies depending on what I want out of the instrument.

I find I don't really think about my hand grip.. it just shifts into position depending on what I'm playing; for example sometimes I shift up to the first finger fulcrum if playing quiet fast rudimental type rolls (like ruffs on a bell pattern or buzz rolls). With the left hand I find I usually use the middle of the palm - but going back to my german grip sometimes for a different sound.. like a down and dirty funky groove with lots of ghost notes - having the butt out to the side gives me a different snare sound, probably from lower stick heights and maybe a more muffled attack. In any case it's fun to play around with. I defintely like the middle palm for both hands on tom rolls - I just get a cleaner, punchier more dynamic sound. I started out with trad left/right grip, then matched German, then American (or whatever you want to call it).. I'm always amazed by the different feels and sounds you get from each one. some will say they all get the same result in terms of sound at the end of the day.. but I say viva la difference!!

Over the years I've noticed that most of us cats who came out of Ottawa Canada do the varied grip thing. It must be an Ottawa cat thing. Probably the cross influence thing from Toronto, Montreal and International thing due to the fact that most top bands at one time or another have played Ottawa. Plus of course the military thing because there are some pretty hot military players attached to National Defense Headquarters.

I generally play with the butt off to the side but recently I notice with up tempo alternating rhythms I pull it to the middle of the palm. I only do that to help the use of all my fingers at the faster tempos. Ive been doing a lot of work with varying my technique for different tempos well still keeping a fairly consistent tone. In the slower tempo/rhythm passages I follow more of my drum corps technique of all wrist and control in the hands and more of a full leg motion with my feet. And fingers/ankles for the faster tempos.
