I have been playing since I was 12 yrs old and always thought I was a good drummer in relation to everyone else. some are better... some are not as good as I.
Great players have always inspired me because they gave me something to look forward to. Will I be as good as ( insert name here ) when I get older has always kept pushing me on thinking that in time I too will get as good as my / your favorite drummer. After all good things take time as my mother used to say. and rightfully so as any thing worth doing well does take time to grow and mature. Ha !!!! What a load of crap I was fed ! You are dealt the cards you are dealt with good or bad that's the scary truth.
That scary fact of life has always haunted me all my life knowing that no matter how hard i practice I will only get as good as my god given ability aka "you will only go so far " and that's it. Now we all like to play drums here right. It's fun knowing you can make music , play music, express music.....did I say express music ??? don't you need a vocabulary to express music ? And the more you can articulate the better ? after all who wants to go around just knowing / understanding 3 chords or you basic rock beat all your life and not saying any thing else.
Its like learning only 10 words in another language and being happy with that !! That gets old really fast knowing that people around you think you have limited brain power skills . That being said I have to say that my brain was shocked after seeing this kid play. Doing fills and independence at 10 that I at 56 still can't play . Its a slap in the face of all the practicing I did all my life thinking I was getting better when all I was getting was a bit more seasoning in my playing but still just as limited as overall skills involved.
hello..how are you ? is all I can say drumming wise. and that really sucks because I understand what he is doing. I just don't have the motor skills to say what I want to say.
I fall in that category of hearing more then I can play...and that's the worst because you know what you want to say and can't say it vs. you not understanding something and not want to say / talk that way anyway.
One knows / understands / hears everything and other hears nothing or very limited understanding
Very frustrating to say the least !
Now all I can think of is will this kid be as good as he is when he hits twenty yrs old ? Most prodigy's loose their ability as they get order and become very good average players showing nothing of their stealer ability later in life will he be happy, or will he get bored thinking " I learned everything there is to learn and nothing is a challenge any more " Its no fun any more ! who knows ??

You cant evaluate yours skills based on another players ability. No matter how young and amazing they may be. Im sure that kid doesnt have half the understanding of how to play a drum than you do. No matter how much raw talent you may have, experience far out ways that talent in many ways. Does he know how to deal with guitarists, or how to unload and set up in a efficient manner? Does he know exactly where and how to hit every drum to make it sing? The one thing Ive noticed that young talent seems to never have is a musical voice, a direction all on there own. Mainly because its impossible to have one without experience. They may have mastered their paradiddles and independence but when they dont have someone telling them what to play, they seem lost in the candy shop.
Besides man, if you didnt give up after hearing buddy rich...why would some punk 10 yro get your feathers in a ruff. Look at the positive aspects of your playing ability, not what you cant do yet.
