Exploding Brushes
      #47396 - Tue Jun 14 2011 04:19 AM (129.42.208.182)

I can't believe this.. I was playing brushes with one of my bands.. not even hard.. and one of the dang things completely exploded.. my snare was filled with wires and I'm left staring at the useless empty nub of the handle! This was a Vic Virth Steve Gadd brush and was supposed to be good quality! Even worse after talking to other drummers they tell me it happens all the time to them! This is my first pair in 30 years that this has happened I still have wire brushes in my stick bag that are 30 years old! Makes me wonder.. what kind of dumb design and manufacturing processes are they using that would allow a cascade failure like this? I've heard the wires are held together with glue.. which obviously has a finite shelf life. I'm guessing my old wire brushes were probably made in a more durable fashion like metal crimping or something else.. but I've never taken one apart. Vic Firth should be aghast! Anyone want to start a class action suit?

Has no one run into this? IT's not like breaking a stick.. you just grab another one.. it's when you're in the middle of a tune and your snare is suddenly filled with metal wires.. to me this is inexcusably bad design! Any brush maker that would allow this should be in another business!

I have never heard of this....I have always used the black regal brand....or is it remo? I don't remember at the moment. If that happens it's as you said...crap design or made by someone that didn't give a damn. So many products today are made like crap....

I've heard of such horror stories, but I've been using the same black Regal Tip set as 777 for years and it hasn't happened to me - not yet, anyway.

I've had a pair of Steve Gadds for about 5 years now, and no signs of that happening... My son has bent a couple of wires out of shape, but no splodey brushes here.

Lucky it happened during a band practice. The guys in the band thought it was hilarious ; partially the stunned look on my face.. but also that without missing a beat with my left hand on hats, I picked up the snare with my right hand and shook the wires off, then put it back on the stand... just in time for the downbeat!

Now that's just nuts. I had a set of very cheap brushes do that when I was 18 in 1958. Never since. You must have got a freak set or something. I used the Ludwig white handled brushes for years and then a while back changed to Regal Jeff Hamiltons and for softer work the Regal Ed Thigpen brushes. I can't kill them no matter what I do with them. That's certainly the oddest thing I've heard for literally decades with brushes.

I've had that happen with the cheapies in the past, but never with the Regal Tips. Sadly, my brushes are more apt to decompose from lack of use than anything else these days.

Have you got in contact with Vic Firth? They should replace them...

Good luck with that one. But you never know. They'd probably ask you to send them back to them so they can check them out.
If it had happened to me I would have mailed them personally to Vic right away with a nasty letter. That would have got their attention I'm sure.
