I broke two ankle bones Saturday night when I slipped and fell in the garage and my left leg went under me. Anyone else experience anything like this and how did it affect your drumming?

Nothing as bad as breakage, thankfully. That sounds pretty nasty! Hope you're okay. I slipped over in our side alley (slimy mould...), slapped an elbow hard on the concrete and grazed my hands -- and managed thus to cushion a lot of the pain my backside would otherwise have felt. My nerves were more shot than anything else! At the time, I was only playing weekends and only missed the one, just to give the elbow and hands time to themselves .

Never busted up the under-pinning. I did snap a left thumb back about 40 years ago which messed up my snare work for about two weeks. I damaged my shoulders pretty badly a few years ago (2000) and had to go through surgery for that episode. That also gave me major trigger fingers in both hands that had to be operated on. Served me right for thinking I could work hard labour in the daytime in an auto dealership machine shops. Cost me around four years out of my playing career and at one stage I was told I'd never play again. Yeah right! I'm a stubborn cuss I guess. I just went about getting back better than ever. No-one tells me I have to give up playing after a full lifetime from age 14 when I turned pro. It happened when I was 59 and the docs that told me I was through were half my age. But never broken anything from the hips down. I take it your are a right hander which means the hi-hat side is a bit of a mess. That's too bad. Definite drag, but my advice is to wait a little while before you try playing especially the hi-hat stuff. Once stuff is healed in the bone area make sure if you can, that you get some physio-therapy from a reputable therapist. Tendons and muscle tend to knot up after a break.

I've broken knuckles, and had tendinitis in both shoulders, but the closest thing to what you're experiencing was last October when I sprained a disk in my lower back which in turn pressed on the nerve root and sent "wrong" signals to my left leg. The result was severe weakness and slow movement on the hi-hat. I was somewhat alarmed that my hat foot wasn't as good as it once was. Oddly, once I resigned myself to the fact and stopped worrying about it, it began to work again.
Heal quickly Jeff and get that Hi-Hat swinging again really soon.

I found out more from the Doc Thursday. I actually broke the left bone badly and tore a ligament on the right of my left ankle . When the swelling goes down more, I am getting a cast (Monday). It's a pretty nasty break. I also play double bass, so this will be a real set back. I also want to do this without surgery since I'm such a big chicken.

Finally had surgery, which went well. It hurts but my knee and leg above my ankle is still numb, so I can't lift it. Hoping for a quick recovery.
