Recording my Percussion lessons?(help appreciated)
      #47458 - Mon Aug 01 2011 12:12 AM (80.213.31.82)

Hi To Everyone..
I am really an old new kid on the block?I am 55 years old but have just joined Tiger bill`s Forum.

I would just like to ask a few opening questions..to get the ball rolling.

Q1. A suitable drum mat to arrange:CONGAS/TIMBALI/STOOL E.T.C.I have looked at a few differnt makes but thought I would take this opportunity get some feedback.

Q2.Best Drum Forum For someone like me who will be learning Latin Percussion instruments(not solely latin music!)Besides this one of course.

Q2A:is there an English language(percussion) magazine available?

Q3.I was thinking of trying to utilise my laptop,by recording some of my lessons /practice and being able to simply play back?I have being looking at these all in one recoders by ZOOM.TASCAM e.t.c. and wondered if these would be a simple way of doing it..I really do not want to get in to home studio recording,I am hoping to take lessons via the internet?

Q3A: if I do go for one of the simple all in one recorders what kind of speakers should I use(inexpensive)

many Thanks Steve

Hey Steve - First I'd like to welcome you to my Forum. Thanks for joining us! As for your questions:

Q1: Personally, I would suggest you get the kind of modular floor mats they use in workshops. They interlock and you can make them into any size you want. Home Depot and Lowe's carries them in the USA.

Q2: I would check out the LP site. They have quite a few online Lessons both for beginners and advanced that would be a good place to start. And, of course, we have lots of percussion experts here as well.

Q2A: Better than a magazine, when learning, would be to Google various percussion instruments you are interested in. You'll find a ton of free lessons online at YouTube and many other sites.

Q3: Your laptop will work fine for recording yourself. If you'd like better sound from your laptop, I highly recommend speakers made by Bose called Companion 2 Computer Speakers. They cost about $60 in the USA thru stores like BJs or Costco. I don't know whether you have any similar stores in your country. Or you could use a good pair of headphones you can get for anywhere from $30 to $60.

I hope that helps.

Stay loose.

Hello Tiger Bill
Many thanks for your kind welcome and very good advice, much obliged to you.
In answer to some of your comments, firstly the floor covering..at present it is just a concrete bare floor..
I was sort of thinking drum mat on top of something and the modular snap togther could work or as an alternative I was thinking of the interlocking wooden floors?

with regards to recording I have being overwhelmed with lots of suggestions, some of them not to pratical and a little over the top,for what I had in mind..then I discovered the ZOOM HN4n recorder which seems to do everything but make coffee..
Just wondered what you and other board members thought of this as a possibility to record the conga/tibales set up
possibly on a boom mike close in to the centre of the set up?

Of course I know little of recording just getting a feel for it,through reading e.t.c.

I am really with you regarding the lessons.LP do indeed offer some great tuition..and I have found lots of other Percussion lessons..just a case of finding the best to follow.

My biggest idea/Dream would be to fly to the US or elsewhere and take an intesive course for begginers? I mension this only because I have read a grat deal about JOhnny Conga in seattle who offers 3 & 5 day intensive conga lessons all in! but I am really not to sure if what Johnny offers would be suitable for someone like me?

anyway I am always open to suggestions

very best wishes Steve

The Zoom setups are the best answer I can think of at this stage for recording and since they are so portable you can go anywhere you find a good hand drum player and record what you are listneing to live etc. It seems to me that one Marilyn Mazur operates out of Scandinavia, possibly Denmark. I'd look around for that player. Her credits are immense and I know she teaches.
If not there certainly in your neck of the woods.
I first ran across her playing with Miles Davis in 1988 in Munich. You can probably find her web site on line and find out how you can get some instruction from her. She is more than World Class.

Hi Roger,
many thanks for a superb reply.very interesting indeed..and I will be doing a search for Marilyn..I wil keep you and everyone informed as to my progress e.t.c.

I am afriad due to illness I am limited as to where I can travel to..so not much chance in Norway or scandinavia to travel as a one would normally do.
But if I found a teacher who could give me a one to one short course then that would be fine..still would take one heck of a lot of planning but very much worth the effort.

The Zoom Hn4 idea, was for me to record my practice/Lessons and play it back to myself or play it online to distant teacher e.t.c.thats the theory anyway.

I am really excited at the possibility of lessons with Marilyn Mazur ..."better than world class" sounds amazing

all the best Roger
Regards Steve

You are very welcome. Mazur works around with the likes of Jan Garbarek. And if you work with Miles Davis you are already out of the top drawer and since Miles usually never had a gal in the band that is even more remarkable. Another high end percussionist hand drummer that works a lot in Northern Europe is Sue Hadjapoulous. These women do a lot of work shops and teaching so you should be able to connect with them or even some of their students who will be terrific. I'll use a Zoom for just about anything I want to refer back to, besides on the floor recording. I don't personally own one but about every cat I've played with around here owns one model or another. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control I don't have access to that stuff right now but I'm planning to pick up one of those Hi-def video-audio Zooms sometime in September. At the moment I'm on the road and answering this from a friend's laptop but by the end of September I should be again centered somewhere in Canada.

Hello Roger,
Nice to hear from you again.I suspect these names will finally become known to me..as I have never haerd of them.but I sure will be following up your suggestions and making contact as soon as possible,

Must admit like the fact you can record direct to micro disc and then to the laptop software (to be decided)
I understand you can plug in two proper mics at the base of the zooms..the current thinking seems to lean heacily to a balanced stereo pair of Oktavia & sn1 mics.(if it is felt worth it adding the two real mics)?
also the positiong some say on boom stands over the drums others say clip to congas?

byt time to sort this out

all the best Steve

Actually, I record ambient when I'm using a Zoom. No close miking needed. Peter Erskine who is a Zoom endorser has recoreded piano, bass, drums and horn that way, basically with only one well place microphone. I just use a couple of Sure vocal mikes at times and lately I've just been using a couple of Sure drum mikes on stands. I have used the internal mike system a lot as well. Just placing the Zoom properly and using a foot switch for rolling and pausing. Usually we have just rented a Zoom for the weekend from a local music store and transferring the sound files to one or other of our computers and returning the Zoom cleaned out. I've always found that it's best to just go as simple as you can get away with. I think you can view Peter Erskine's Zoom sessions on you tube. You'll find they don't use much hi-tech type miking. They just use the Zoom as is. They are about the easiest unit on the Planet to use and if you have the loose money to get one I would highly recommend one. Because they are very common around here where I am playing, I intend when I can, to buy the new Hi-Def audio video model because most of the cats I play with have one or other of the audio recording Zooms. At the moment I am in the wilds of Nova Scotia working with a small band so I am completely on the road right now and very compact. When I settle again after this run I'll probably start investing in some stuff like that. At the moment I am basicaly having to re-build my whole system of operating as a player teacher so it'll be a few months before I can get back to a more static existence.

Hi Roger,
Really do thank you for your really interesting replies..they help a lot beleive me..I am trying my best not to make expensive mistakes(I am really good at that) I am taking my time to get things as right as I possibly can..so your imput is valued.

To my great surprise I found a HN4n here in Norway at a really competitive price? this is very unusual as Norway is third most expensive place on earth! so will be buying it very soon.

I could not agree more with the above and this is what I am searching for Roger

I hope you get the Hi-Def versions soon they look fantastic.

I will certainly have alot to view, when I can do it.Beleive it or not I am in the middle quite literally,of quite heavy medical treatment, but I keep leaning over to use the net

so please excuse the short answers..It really does keep my mind on more pleasant things...

all the very best Steve

Darn it man. get better so you can get drumming. I went through some stuff back at the beginning of this decade and after being told I'd never drum again I went to work and proved them monstrous liars. Just get determined and do what ever it takes to make the drumming happen. I may not be playing that much with bands right now but I am still on the drums, any drums every day and woe betide anyone who tries to stop me.
