Although this question could sound silly, I'd like to know your opinion in case it could damage the snare drum if the snares are always on Thanks

I leave them on... but flip the throwoff once in a while to 'reseat' the wires. No science behind this..but works for me. I used to turn them off a long time ago.. there was a debate about which was better : off/on - does it lengthen wire life... or reduce it by constant stretch & release?.[vs. On always /constant tension]. Physics anyone? I never really noticed any difference between the 2 options.. other than the wires are less protected when dangling down [moving equipment, or catching them by accident]

I leave them on all the time unless there is something going on in the breaks with other musicians or speakers. Sometimes the venues I play will crank up canned music in the live band breaks.. I drop the snares off in those instances so that there is not a constant snare buzz in the breaks. Otherwise the snare wires stay on. Even when I put the drum in its case.

Same here. I've never noticed any damage to the snares. The only problem I've encountered is occasionally not remembering to flip the snares back on when it's time to play!

I always try to flip them off. I feel it will help the snares & bottom head last longer, even though I have no proof. Plus I don't want to have to go turn them off when another sound makes them buzz.
I also release my hihat clutch so it's not stressing the spring in the stand.

I do the same thing with the hi-hat clutch. Always have. Just a habit at this point.

I always keep the snares off live after the drums soundcheck until it's time for me to play. Nothing worse, imo, than snare buzz while the other guys are getting their sound or during support bands performance.

I agree with Py... I turn my snares off just as a courtesy to the other players. Some notes makes the wires respond and can be annoying at times.
