Okay - who invented the disco chirp?
      #47671 - Tue Jan 10 2012 07:29 AM (129.42.208.173)

IT occurred to me over the holidays.. who was the first drummer to introduce the disco hi-hat chirping sound in the 70s? .. and what are it's roots?

eg. boom cheeum chee boom cheeum chee etc.

My guess is it was adapted from a latin beat but not sure which one. I got sick to death of it in the disco era - but it made a comeback several years ago and it's back all over pop music these days..

There's my trivia question for 2012!

I could be all wet here, but as far as I'm concerned the use of the "zizz" in grooves came from the New orleans cats.
However that stuff has been around since Papa Jo Jones who pretty well invented the hi-hat stand. However I guess the most visible funky cat who brought it into the funk and mainstream popular music would be I suspect Zigaboo Modeliste from New Orleans, the founding member drummer with the Meters along with Al Jackson junior with the MGs. I know I started using it in funky grooves after the first time I heard Zig playing the Cissy Strut with the Meters. It just jumped right into the drumming through those cats I guess. The disco cats just used it because basically the way they used it was like a steam pump that made the dancers boogie like crazy.

.. that and the octave bass lines! As much as I get tired of hearing the 'zizz', it still is a blast to play. Even John Scofield uses it for funky jazz riffs - so it must be alright :). I think the best sound of that hihat I've heard is on the disco anthem 'I Will Survive' (Gloria Gaynor).. it has a slinky sound that is hard to reproduce. Not sure if the drummer got the sound naturally or the producers worked some recording magic on it.. but there's just something about it... the arc of the sound maybe.
