I am 11, 5 months of lessons. Some days nothing works, practice just falls apart, hands dont seem to want to work. Is this common? how do I approach a remedy? Thanks.

Just keep it up. It is perfectly normal for that to happen. As long as you're practicing, you will keep progressing. It takes time and patience.
Good luck!

As lambChops said, that happens to ALL of us even after we've been playing for eons (many years:o) Just hang in there and it'll all "come to you" with diligence and lots of practice. Keep pounding those pots and pans:o)

I agree with Popeye, it happens to me now and then and I go back to the basics. I practice the very beginning lessons and work my way back up.
Just asking the questions you have puts you way ahead of the game. I know a few wannabe drummers who fall apart all the time and never seem to notice. To me this shows you have good ears and can tell what good drumming should sound like.
Keep up the good work.

24 years of playing, I still have off days bro. Take it slow, don't get impatient- there's a lot to learn and a life time to learn it!!! Enjoy the journey!!

thank you for all your replies gentlemen. I went to see my teacher play last night, (in a 14 piece big band) but the rythym section was hidden away at the back (glum look).

5 months is nothing. It takes years to build coordination and consistency. Be patient, and set short term and long term goals.

Buzebus: Hi cat, welcome to the world of drumming. I've been playing and teaching around this old world since I was eight years old. I'm now 66 (Whoa, ancient!) Well, don't shove on yourself. Some days we can do things faster than others. It usually goes in about a five day cycle. Nothing to worry about. Too bad you couldn't see your teacher but well, we are drummers and they usually put us back in the back of the band. Unless of course we are doing the big ticket thing in which case we are up in the clouds on a massive riser. Just work at stuff and remember, you are your own best friend. Don't beat on your best friend, treat your pal well and don't get upset when things don't work out as you expected. Just listen to your instructor and most of all, learn early to listen to all different types of music and pick up rhythms man. Rhythms!!
