Our modern computer technology is killing people
      #45357 - Tue Aug 25 2009 11:21 AM (208.103.225.184)

Kind of a rough title but I picked this investigative CBS report up off the internet and thought I had better break a long silence in this area
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4586903n

I'd like to say enjoy but that's impossible.

Very interesting - I never knew what happened to all the waste before.
Now the question is: how can this 'e-waste' be recycled more safely? And: how can our electronic gear be made out of safer materials?

Don't get me wrong. I feel bad for those people who have to live like that. BUT, on the other hand they bring this on themselves by making all this cheap sh#* in the first place.
That stuff is going back from where it came. Let them deal with the problem. Not US. They steal our jobs by building this stuff cheaply.
Maybe when they figure out that cleaning it up also has a cost, there stuff will reflect that cost as well.
Maybe the playing field will be more even in the future.

Hey Roger - Thanks for bringing this up! This stuff should be being recycled not trashed! I appoint you our official "investigative reporter!" And your title for this post is dead on but it's not only computer technology that is killing us!

Wireless devices are being used more and more each day and these all have a detrimental effect on the human body. If you use wireless devices with your computer you are endangering your health. If you have a habit of plastering your cell phone to your head while talking, don't be surprised if you develop a brain tumor. Tumors are becoming more and more common today especially in young people and the major cause is due to cell phone use. I, too, use a cell phone but I use it either with a speakerphone or a headset that is NOT wireless but hard-wired. The trick is to keep it as far away from your head - and your body - as possible!

Technology is getting better and better. It allows us to do things that we couldn't have dreamed of few decades ago - but it comes at a very high price.

Unfortunately, that price is the health and safety not only of our planet but of the entire human race!

You should check the SAR numbers for your cellphone and make sure you limit exposure as much as possible. To be fair, there are a lot of contradictory studies out there; some say no risk others say there is. The problem is that no long term studies have verified anything yet beyond a shadow of a doubt.. so despite reassurances from cellphone manufaturers (who's only interest is there bottom line) it's better to be safe than sorry. The rating for cellphone radiation is here:

http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phone-radiation-levels/

So ya.. limit exposure as much as possible, and keep it away from you. The WHO just released a study saying that thre Is a link.. so be informed..

I'm with Tea Bag on this one! There is absolutely a link to cancer and exposure but not just to cell phones but to all types of wireless technologies. Just look up the stats on the increase in brain tumors alone and you'll realize that something is wrong!

The safest thing to do is to limit your exposure - especially to your cell phone. Never talk by physically holding it up against your ear! Use a (wired, not wireless) headset or speaker-phone to talk. Better yet, Text instead of talk, especially if you're out in public because nobody wants to hear your conversation anyway. And because it's a whole lot safer to keep your cell phone as far away from you as possible when your using it. And please don't carry it in your pocket or by clipping it onto your body.

Modern technology is really wonderful but it, unfortunately, is extremely dangerous to our health! And don't even get me started on GMOs! (Genetically Modified foods!) But that rightfully belongs in a thread of its own!

Worse and much more imminent is the threat from endochrine disrupting petro chemicals (aka synthetic estrogens), found in virtually all petroleum based products from plastics to pesticides to fertilizers to all kinds of prepared food containers. IMHO, this is the primary imminent threat to animal life on Earth.

It seems clear that you have both the sellers and buyers breaking the law. Clearly there is little or no enforcement of these laws. Maybe the government officials were watching porn, like the SEC, when they should have been watching what the recyclers were shipping to China. Perhaps they could write a bunch of new laws and create new departments to study this problem. This after all is what government excels in! Sure they'll gift wrap it in sincerity with the main goal to garner votes and good will. Then they could create more departments to study the efficiency and effects of the first department. This could be a great thing.....creating jobs, government jobs, to study why bad people do bad things. After 4 or 5 years they would probably come to one conclusion.....it was Bush's fault. The study would find Cheney and Halliburton along with Goldman Sachs all profited directly and obscenely at the expense of poor Chinese children. We could then have the political elite schedule some show trials and dress down these evil capitalists....it's all for show of course as those that conduct the trials are all in bed with those they question , but we don't really want to dwell on that! At the end of the show trial, our political elite could snap into action and create a new a special tax on recycling all old electronics when you purchase them new! This would make the people feel good and very green! Another special feature of electronics reform, would be a reparations tax on all Americans to go directly to the people working at the Hong Kong dump. The beauty of this, is the creation of more government departments to manage and distribute the reparations funds. This thing could be as good as Cap and trade!

And now for something completely different, reality. Federal agencies like the SEC, FDA, EPA, USDA, CPSC, DOL, DOI, etc. etc. don't do what they were created by Congress to do because, since Ronald Reagan, they've been headed by the lawyers and CEO's of the same industries they are supposed to be regulating.

It's called capitalist corruption of government. 777Dumb has never heard of it. He just knows what he hears on Fox Noise and repeats it here for those of us who don't watch Fox Noise. In 777Dumb's world, the unregulated, redistribution of wealth to the top 1/100th of 1% is economic progress! He applauds the Great Republican Depression of 2008 as a monument to the success of free market capitalism! And he's right. That's exactly what it is.

Again with the name calling! How amusing the only elected officials that have ever done you wrong are republicans! But you're right, I should edit my post to say Blame Reagan! Certainly the most sinister and evil man to walk the earth! The pillar of your Corporatocracy!
