Conga - timbale type drums
      #46381 - Sun Mar 21 2010 06:12 AM (70.54.50.65)

I'm looking for small drums to attach to my percussion tree:
1. a small conga
- ideally this would still sound conga-like even when hit with sticks, and would of course have to be tunable
2. a small timbale
- pretty sure LP makes something like this

So my question is, has anyone come across anything like this.. and is it possible to get a conga sound using sticks instead of hands?

The other alternative is of course small electronic pads (I have an octapad) - but that adds a whole other level of hassle; untangling cords, sound modules, lugging an amp, or relying on the sound guy to keep your stage sound level right (if he isn't at the bar!). Then again I prefer real sound to canned samples..

i use theese http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/-Steel-Piccolo-Tom?sku=443250

i guess if you experiment with different heads you'd obtain your dissired sound. i have clear remo ambassadors for that timbale sound.

Cool - I haven't seen those before. I'll check them out.. they are the perfect size I'm looking for.. easy to move and pack.. and a fraction of the price of the LP mini-timbales.

One thing I discovered by accident is that for a timabale sound you don't need a huge drum. One day I started hitting a thin calf skin covered tamborine with sticks - and it sounded a lot like a timbale - and was really loud esp. on rim shots... the only downside is it had a bit of a 'jingle'. The DW should fit the bill - Thanks!

I've seen a product which look like conga heads, but are in fact congas. http://www.lpmusic.com/Product_Showcase/Congas/compact-conga.html
And if you have a spare steel snare, this could double as a timbale - just take off the bottom head and crank it up.

I was going to mention those Giovanni's. I've used them on rentals from time to time. I used to use two full congolitas but they are a bit of a pain to haul around and also to mount on any type of angle. The Giovannis are a great deal. Tunable, playable with hands or sticks and really sound like congas. They also project very well too.

Yes - I think the Giovannis will fit the bill. They are kind of expensive (like the LP mini-tims), but it's probably because it includes a stand and 2 drums. I just need one drum of each type to attach to my stand.. so the DW with the arm is perfect.. now I just need to find out if I can buy 1 Giovanni and attach it somehow.

I have used double snares or a metal snare converted to a timbale.. but they are too much effort to lug around, which is why I'm looking for mini-drums which sound good when mic'd.
Thanks!

So, Tea, you are in Canada. Ottawa actually. They have a single on sale down here at Long & McQuades in the main store. You can get L&M up there to source here through their computer and get it sent up to you. I see it every time I go into their drum shop here in Halifax on Cunard Street. Been there since before they took over the Music Stop chain a few years ago. You should be able to get a good price on it.

You're welcome. By the way. When they picked up the Eastern Canada (Maritimes) Music Stop chain they also picked up all their lines. Stuff like Meinl/Byzance, Aquarian heads plus a whole world of different lines in hand percussion. Sometimes it pays to get L&M to source their data base across Canada. Also it pays to get them to see what the trade-ins are in other locales. They have a kit of Yammie slightly used absolutes here. 3 toms and a bass for under $1000.00 in the used section. They were used at the ECMAs and then classified as used. Also they have sitting in there a set of 4 piece high end Mahogany pearls with an 18" bass that Billy Hart used last year at the Jazz festival for half price. Cast rims, the works. It's also where I picked up some of Erskine's Zildjians used at a PAS clinic at St F-X. They were prototypes and he had left them there after he was finished with the clinic. They showed up in the used bins. I also picked up an Armand traditional ride for dirt cheap as well out of the used bin.
