Damaging Xylophone Teak Bars?
      Mon May 03 2010 03:55 PM (174.70.130.38)

Hi. I'm new here, and not a percussionist, but the mother of a 15 year old who is. I just bought him a Kosth 3 octave C-C xylophone on ebay. The seller, a music company that likely was reselling it, listed it as having teak bars. I don't know a whole lot about instruments and so have been deferring to my son. He's enjoying it so far, but I'm concerned about the bars. He's using poly ball mallets like he uses on the xylophone at school that has synthetic keys. It seems to me that the mallets are too hard and could damage the wood keys, and in fact I can tell which area he's playing on the most as there is some wear appearing within only a month.

He insists he's correct, and constantly points out the fact that I have no instrument/band training. What are the right type of mallets to use for a xylophone like this? Are these really teak bars? I've tried to do some research online but can't find out much about Kosth since they're out of business.

Thanks for any help you can provide!
MK
